I smiled, reached over, and grabbed her hand. “Ignore her. Ignore everyone in here. They don’t matter. Understand, my beautiful girl?”

She blinked slowly before looking down at the white tablecloth. “You make it sound easy.”

“It is easy. Remember what I said? I will be the center of your entire world.”

She glared at me. “A little conceited, there.”

I shrugged. “It’s the way it will be for you. Now and forever. Just as you are the center of mine.”

She sat back, surprised. “Yours?”

I nodded. “Mine.”

She didn’t answer me for a moment. Then, “I don’t know why you’re telling me this.”

“Don’t you? Or are you just not ready for the answer? That’s fine. I can be patient,mi corazón.”

She shook her head. “Why lemonade?”

“Because I heard it can relieve nausea.”

“Oh.”

I smiled a little. “Oh.”

Bianca might have thought she was slick, but I didn’t miss the fact that she had gotten sick nearly every morning this week. Her pregnancy symptoms were showing.

The waitress came back with the drinks.

“Would you like to order the chef’s special today?” she asked once she set them on the table.

Bianca shrugged.

“Yes, that will be fine,” I said.

The girl met my eyes before looking away quickly, mumbled something I didn’t care to hear, and walked off.

Bianca stared after the girl strangely. I squeezed her hand to get her attention back to me.

“You didn’t sign a prenup,mi corazón.”

It took a moment for my words to register. Her eyes widened. “Why not? That was stupid of you.”

I laughed, and she blushed. “I already told you. There’s no escaping this. Escaping me. You will be my wife until one of us stops breathing.”

Her mouth opened, but when nothing came out, she closed it.

I continued. “Whatever example my parents set with their marriage, I don’t share the sentiment.”

She took a deep breath. “I know.”

I nodded. “You’re mine. And I always protect what’s mine. The life I lead, it’s not a pretty one. There’s a lot of dark shit going on, and sometimes it can be dangerous, especially for my wife. You have a target painted on your back because of it.”

She blanched. “They would come after me?”

I shook my head. “I won’t let them.”

“And who are these people?”
