It was on the tip of my tongue to tell him it didn’t matter to me what he needed to work out. What came out was a breathless, “And did you?”
He drew back and looked at me strangely. Then he smiled, and I was uncertain if I should be wary of this smile or find it charming.
Perhaps a little of both.
“Yes,” he answered. “I did.”
I nodded.
“Come home with me tonight,” he said, surprising me.
I stilled. “W-what?”
“Come home with me tonight,” he repeated as if we were talking about what we’d done over the weekend.
I shook my head.
“Why not?” he asked me, his voice a soft coo that affected me more than it should have.
“Because the l-last time…”
I looked off to the side.
I could pretend his rejection was nothing personal, but it still stung because it hadfeltpersonal.
“Last time was a mistake,” he said. “I should have never let you go.”
All sweet words, but Gabriel was probably the kind of man who knew what to say to get what he wanted.
“I won’t be making the same mistake twice,mi novia.”
Another nickname. It sounded just as beautiful as the other ones, but I didn’t understand what he meant. And something about the look in his eyes told me this word meant something so much more than the others.
“What does that mean?” I asked. “It sounds beautiful.”
His eyes were soft when he looked at me. “You think it sounds beautiful?”
I nodded.
He bent and ran his lips over mine.
My eyes fluttered shut.
He made it soeasyto want to give in to him when everything in my life so far had been anything but easy.
“Come home with me,” he said again, his lips skimming over mine softly, not really stopping for it to turn into a proper kiss.
Nonetheless, I felt his touch all the way down to my core.
I couldn’t think of a single reason why I couldn’t go home with him for the night.
I opened my eyes slowly, trying to grasp onto anything I could say, but that brought my attention to his deep brown eyes, and they were even harder to turn away from.
“Kaia—” I said finally.
Gabriel interrupted me before I could say anything else. “Raphael will make sure she gets home safe.”
“But—”
