Arms wrapped around me, and I held still.
His scent instantly invaded my senses, and I calmed.
Gabriel.
I whimpered and burrowed into him, feeling his powerful body shake with his own anger.
“Who the fuck are you, and what are you doing sniffing around in my place of business and around my woman?”
I closed my eyes.
His woman?
I should probably deny that.
There was no way he meant it in the way I thought.
“I — I —” The man stuttered, now that there was someone bigger and meaner than him present. He wasn’t so fucking cocky anymore.
I tightened my fists around Gabriel’s shirt, wondering how many times this man had intimidated a woman and gotten away with it.
There was no telling what he would have done to me had Gabriel not shown up.
I moved closer to Gabriel.
He would be able to keep me safe if I buried myself under his skin, wouldn’t he?
It had been so long since I felt safe, I almost forgot what the feeling was.
Gabriel tightened his hold on me.
“Get him out of here,” Gabriel said, and I assumed he was talking to Johnny.
I didn’t bother turning around to see.
The man screamed and struggled as he was being pulled away. Then a car door slam cut off the scream completely.
Gravel crunched beneath the tires as the car drove off, and I stayed where I was.
It felt so good in his arms, and the nausea and the light-headedness were fading.
It was the first time in three long weeks that I felt marginally like myself.
Everything was silent between us for a while.
Distantly, I could hear the growl of a car engine as it drove past, but that was all.
Then Gabriel spoke. “Sweetheart, look at me.”
I shook my head.
“Why not? Did the bastard hurt you?”
His voice darkened as he asked that, and I didn’t know what to make of it.
Again, I shook my head.
“Then why don’t you look at me,mi corazón?”
