I looked up at him expectantly, and he reached up and tucked a strand of my dark hair away from my face.

“You don’t have to worry about anything.”

I nodded.

I hadn’t forgotten the talk we had recently. But I was too tired to argue. And something told me I wouldn’t win a fight with Gabriel.

Not right now. Not when I was feeling like complete shit.

Besides, I had a feeling Gabriel was a man used to getting what he wanted.

At this point, I just wanted to get into my own bed and sleep.

“Did you sleep last night?” I asked.

He shook his head, and I looked at him.

Really looked at him.

His eyes were still bright and aware. I wouldn’t have thought he was tired had I not gotten a closer look.

It made him seem more human because even though he was very much human, he always looked so self-assured. I almost couldn’t believe he could be anything but perfect.

It made my heart soften toward the man, and that was such a dangerous thing.

I couldn’t be soft toward him.

I yawned, and Gabriel cupped my cheek. His thumb swiped across my bottom lip, and I could only look at him, unable to pull away.

“Go to sleep. I’ll wake you up when it’s time to leave the hospital.”

“Kaia—”

“She was here when we first brought you to the hospital. I had Raphael take her home. If you weren’t getting discharged so early, I imagine she would be back.”

I nodded. “Do you know what happened to my phone?”

“I have it. You can have it back to talk to your friend after you rest. I doubt she is awake at this time, anyway.”

I looked down at my lap. What he said was true, but I wanted to talk to Kaia. I wanted her to tell me what I’d known all along.

Gabriel wasn’t a good man, and he wasn’t good for me.

His next action contradicted my line of thought when he gently pushed me back down on the bed and tucked the blanket around me.

I looked up as he hovered over me.

I should be scared, considering his huge frame and dark eyes made me think of the Grim Reaper standing over me, getting ready to take my soul.

But then he sat back down.

“I’ll be here when you wake.”

“You don’t have to stay—”

“I’ll be here when you wake,” he repeated, a determined look in his eyes.

I nodded, my eyes feeling heavy.
