Kaia’s voice drifted in and out as I got lost in the memory of all that had happened.

It didn’t help that I had woken up in this room alone, and I didn’t know where Gabriel was off to or what he was doing.

I blinked and focused back on her voice. I was about to interrupt her when she said something that made me pause.

“Come again?” I asked.

“I asked if you heard what happened to Corey.”

“What do you mean, whathappened to Corey? What happened to Corey?”

“So you didn’t hear? It’s all over the news, and a few girls from the club called me this morning to gossip about it.”

“What happened?” I asked, my heart feeling like it was about to burst open from inside my chest.

“They found him.”

“They found him?” I asked, still confused as hell.

Found him doing what?

“His body,” she said.

I froze, and my blood ran cold.

She continued, unaware of the turmoil I was in. “Yeah, in the Chihuahuan Desert. Most of his body had been eaten and mangled by coyotes, so it was hard to tell, but they think he died before he was placed in the desert. They said his throat might have been crushed, but a lot of the news outlets are waiting on more from the autopsy. Fuck, Bianca. It just… it feels surreal that the man we knew just… died, you know. And in a horrific way, at that.”

“Right,” I replied, but I was no longer paying attention to the conversation.

Corey had been scared of Gabriel.

I’d thought it was an overreaction and that he didn’t want to get fired, but Coreyhadbeen scared.

Fuck.

I was going to be sick.

I was—

I gasped when something glinted from the reflection of the sun through the window.

I held up my left hand and looked down at the princess-cut diamond ring on my finger.

The band was silver and surrounded by more tiny sparkling diamonds. It fit my finger perfectly.

It was an engagement ring.

What. The. Fuck.

“Kaia, I, uh, I have to go. I’ll talk to you later, okay?”

I licked my parched lips as she said something on the phone that I didn’t catch before I hung up and took a closer look at the ring.

I was going to be sick.

The door clicked open, and I jumped as it opened to reveal Gabriel’s huge frame standing there.

We didn’t say anything for a moment.
