Page 43 of Giovanni the Savage

Victor Kincaid.

My eyes flutter around the room, suddenly feeling unsafe.

"Yes, sir."

My voice is a stark difference to how I look. I wouldn’t be surprised if he's lurking in the darkness and watching me lose my cool.

"Do we still have our deal?" he asks coldly.

“Uhm … yes,” I mutter.

He chuckles sadistically. "You know why I asked?"

"No."

"Because you seem to be playing house instead of digging, missy."

That damn name.

My tears don't warn me before they flood my eyes.

"I'm digging, sir."

His dark chuckle sends a chilly feeling through me.

"You're digging for intel, or he is digging into you?"

There's a roar of laughter in the background, and my mouth shakes with embarrassment.

He doesn't wait for me to talk.

"He can't seem to take his eyes off you," he mutters.

One thing is sure, Victor is here for obvious reasons.

"I hope you're using that to your advantage. Unless you're too busy swooning to remember your place."

A tear rolls down my cheek, but I clamp my hand on my mouth to kill the sob.

"I have four men outside Lucas's apartment right now," he grits, and I know he's not bluffing. "You seem to have forgotten what is at stake because you're not digging."

"I am, sir," I counter.

"That's not what it looks like!" he yells loudly, slamming something, and the sob breaks free.

"Two weeks, Majors. Two weeks to submit your first assignment. Or someone will go down."

His chuckles on his end as the call drops, and I feel more tears stream down my face. A ping on my phone alerts me to a text.

It's an attachment. I load the picture and see a clear view of Lucas's bedroom window. He's reading on his bed, unaware of the eyes watching him.

"We're always watching. Do what needs to be done."

The text follows the picture, and my heart throbs with hurt. I scream loudly, clutching my head so tight I nearly rip out my hair.

My breathing comes out labored, and it feels like I'm being choked. I clutch my neck to stop the feeling.

I have to be strong. If not for anyone, for Lucas.
