He walks past me to his desk.

"You can set that up by twelve," he adds.

"I'll get on it." I nod and turn to leave.

"Are you okay?" he inquires.

"Yeah, why?" I give him a confident smile, masking the guilt clawing at me.

"You weren't responding to the texts I sent you." He sits on his swivel chair.

I sigh in relief.

"Oh, I was busy compiling the tech management documents." I nod to the manila folders I had put on his desk long before I snuck in.

His eyes brighten in realization.

"I didn't even notice that." He chuckles and brings them closer to himself. "Okay, I'll go through them and get back to you."

I nod and turn to leave the office, trying not to make my hasty exit too obvious.

The second I walk out the door, I expel a heavy breath from my lips and clutch my chest.

That was so fucking close.

If he suspected anything, he didn't mention it. Still, the most important thing is getting the information I need.

I'm not going to place the guilt of hurting a man I barely know over saving the life of my brother.

I get a text from Victor, and I open it to see it reads, “Received” with a thumbs-up emoji underneath the pictures I sent him.

When did criminals start using emojis?

I clutch the flash drive tightly and walk to my office, thankful for what I've achieved while dreading tomorrow because who's to say that Giovanni won't notice what is amiss between now and tomorrow?

CHAPTER THIRTEEN – Giovanni

Every time I ride the elevator, I’m reminded of the day Luna and I were in it together. By some fate, ever since then, we haven’t been in the elevator together, but I can tell it’s her attempt at ignoring me.

I’ve never had anything sexual to do with any of my workers because, according to my father, sexual relations with your workers can destroy an empire. However, I don’t know why I feel like that rule doesn’t apply to Luna. For some reason, I was ready to risk it and kiss the hell out of her because, at that moment, all I could think about was her lips, which looked like they were begging to be kissed.

I know I have the same effect on her, and it’s laughable how she tries so hard to suppress the tension between us.

She’s still on my mind when I step out of the elevator, and I almost groan when I see Elvira walking towards me.

“Good day, sir,” she greets chirpily.

I don’t stop walking when I reply. “Good day.”

“I was wondering if you needed help.”

Her eyes go to the laptop bag in my hand, but I can sense the double meaning.

“No, Elvira. Go back to work,” I clip and walk past her.

Her termination has been pending, but the only reason she’s still here is because she’s good at her job. One slip-up and she’s gone. She’s been pinning for my attention since she started working here, but only one person can exclusively have that.

I push my door open, and the sight makes me pause in my tracks.
