Everything is falling into place. I’m happy, Luna’s happy. However, from experience, I can’t help the nagging feeling that soon, it won’t be so anymore.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN - Luna

I swear my alarm could wake someone from the dead. I squint my eyes open, annoyed by the intrusion of light, and hit the clock, then the alarm stops. Snoozing isn’t healthy, but I’m trying to get one more hour of sleep before I start my day.

My sleep is interrupted again, but this time by the loud sound of my ringtone. I ignore it at first and turn away from my nightstand. The ringtone continues, and then loud pings follow, which signals a series of texts.

What could be so important?

I turn and grasp my phone as curse words flow from my mouth. I open my phone to see that I have missed calls from a number.

“Six, three, two,” I recite and check if I have any other call with the person, but it turns out I don’t.

It’s an unknown number; one more swipe reveals I have texts from the same number.

A brick settles in my chest as I prepare to check the texts. It’s okay to get texts from unknown numbers, but when Lucas’s life is in danger, I’m more scared of what I’ll see.

I open the chat box to see that the person had sent me texts and attachments.

“Hey, missy.”

From the text, I can immediately tell that it’s from Victor. He hasn’t messaged me since I sent him the territory information, and only a fool would message her stalker or, in this case, kidnapper.

His following text makes bile rise in my throat.

“I have a few things I think you should see.”

The wink emoji beside the text makes me gag.

My fingers suddenly get sweaty, and I’m mentally preparing myself to see what he has in store for me.

As if he’s watching me, another text comes in.

“Don’t be scared, I know you’ve seen worse.”

My fears are raised, and my eyes go to my window and scan around my room to find nothing amiss.

Could have easily been a lucky guess.

“The sooner you open it, the better.”

Right after I read his last text, I click on the first attachment and the content takes a while to load, only adding to my nerves.

When it does load, I’m not prepared for the picture that stares back at me.

“What the hell?”

It’s a picture of Giovanni and I at the gala. In the picture, we are posing for the paparazzi right before we left the event. His hand is on my hip, mine is at the crook of his elbow. He’s gazing down at me lovingly, and there’s a broad smile on my face. I look like I’m laughing at something he said.

After the scrutiny, I get a text.

“You both seem rather comfortable, maybe you need an awakening.”

My heartbeat quickens as I tap on the second attachment, and blood leaves my face instantly.

The picture makes my eyes glaze with tears. I’m staring helplessly at Lucas, strapped to a chair. He’s beaten to a pulp, and his eyes are fluttering.

“No!” I scream and open the next attachment to see the same picture from a different angle. “No, fuck!”
