“Ugh.”

“Agreed. If you want, I can have Aquarius scan the handwriting and convert it to text. Then he can run a search on it to see if we can pinpoint the important passages.”

“That would be helpful.”

At the fifth level, he paused and frowned.

“What’s wrong? Am I too heavy?”

“Hardly. I’ve carried Scorpio up these stairs after a bender, and he’s more than twice your size.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“Tower hasn’t given me a sign yet where to put you.”

“Maybe you missed it.”

“No. It has ways of making sure its will is known.” He resumed climbing. Surely Tower would soon show him where she’d be staying.

“What floor do you live on?” she asked as they passed the sixth.

“Ninth.”

“No wonder your legs are so thick.”

“It’s not the only thing,” he muttered and immediately wanted to take it back. He didn’t make dirty jokes. Thankfully, she didn’t seem to notice.

At the ninth floor, Tower finally showed him where to take Ruth, and he groaned.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Tower’s being a dick.”

“How so?”

“Because apparently, you’re staying with me.”

“Excuse me?”

He indicated the open door farther up the hall. “That’s my place.”

“And?”

“There’s the sign I was waiting for.”

“An open door is just an open door.”

“Not here, it isn’t. In this case, it means you’re staying with me. Which is bullshit. A man needs his privacy,” he shouted to the ceiling.

No reply. Tower didn’t speak, nor could it be threatened, bribed, or cajoled. Looked like he’d be getting more than just a partner on his next mission. He now had a bloody roommate too.

Absolute bullshit.

How was a man supposed to drink with her watching his every move? How could a man think with her analyzing his facial expressions? How could a man jerk off when the woman currently giving him the urge might catch him?

Fuck. And fuck again. He should have let those mercs shoot him.
