That’s what he wanted. He was choosing to try to form an attachment.

Heidi didn’t seem to lean the same way as he did. She wanted her life back the way it was, and he would give it to her. The last thing he wanted in a relationship was for either party to feel trapped because they’d rather be somewhere else.

That didn’t mean he couldn’t do his best to make her want to form an attachment to him as well.

But in the end, he knew he would set her free and wish her well, even if it wasn’t at all what he wanted.

“So, what do we have that’s solid?”

Outlaw guided the meeting since Zombie’s brain was somewhere else entirely. Just another layer to the appreciation he felt for his vice.

“We got her stuff, no issues. Everything she needs to lay low while we deal with the pervy ass prophet.”

Santa added, “While they were inside, I distracted the landlord, just in time too. He was headed to her unit to padlock it.”

That was an interesting development.

“Seems the brother informed him of Heidi’s death when he caught him entering her apartment.” Santa pointed. “Which is what Virus caught on the camera feed, but they stepped out of mic range before we heard the full conversation. Landlord says the brother claimed she killed herself, said he had a note, but didn’t provide any documents. Landlord told him as soon as he does, he’ll allow him to clean out the apartment. Stan was livid, by the way, promised to return with the documents.”

His grin was disarming. Zombie was impressed with how much he’d learned. “How in the hell did you get all that out of him?”

“What can I say, people just like me.” He leaned back in the chair. “Plus, I told him her brother was a piece of shit. Wasn’t hard, he hates those freaks as much as anyone. Seemed to really care for our girl.”

Zombie got a good feeling hearing Santa refer to her like that. Our girl.

“Also said I’m her uncle on her dad’s side and been keeping an eye on her since she got away from there. Asked him to let me know as soon as he could let someone in so that someone could be me instead.”

“So, it’s all locked up now. No going back for us or them?”

“Yes. Apparently, except for maybe Santa. Lucky for Heidi, her landlord is a stand-up guy and locked her shit down tight,” Outlaw answered. “I checked, and as of COB yesterday, there is zero filed about her being dead, so if Stan wants back inside, he’ll have to bring documents, and Virus is plugged in. Alerts are set as soon as her name is typed on a legal filing, we’ll know.”

Virus’s abilities were scary as fuck. Zombie was glad he was on their side.

Santa’s words rolled around in his brain as the rest of the guys talked strategy and plans.

“Wait, what’s in Heidi’s apartment that Stan wants so bad?” Outlaw interrupted, and all eyes turned to him.

“I mean, it can’t be money or anything like that. He has plenty with the coffers of The Children at his disposal. So, what could she possibly have that he needs so bad it would be worth the risk to tell a lie that he can get caught in fairly easily? That’s sloppy.”

Zombie felt stupid as shit that it wasn’t the first question on his mind.

“Shit.”

“Fuck.”

“Damn.”

And a cacophony of a million other curse words rang out.

“Do you think Heidi knows what it is?” Hook’s question was a legit one. One they all would be asking in a typical situation, but it rubbed Zombie raw.

“Of course she doesn’t fucking know.” Zombie stood. Hands curled into fists so tight his knuckles ached. “If she knew, she would’ve told us.”

“I’m just doing my fucking job and asking the questions you’re too pussy drunk to ask.”

Squatch rose, placing his hand on Hook’s chest who’d risen from his seat too. Outlaw took the same stance with Zombie.

“You’re out of line, Hook,” he grit out before batting Outlaw’s hand away and pointing to his SAA. “I’ll see you after church.” Zombie looked forward to it. His men didn’t fling disrespect around often, so punishment was rare in their brotherhood, but Zombie was itching to met it out today.
