Once he’d worn her out again, they slept.

Her last thought as she drifted off…she was really doing this.

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

ZOMBIE

Zombie had an extra spring in his step. Heidi was his, and that was everything he never knew he wanted. The words, I love you, Wayne Slater, were playing on a loop in his mind as he mixed up a perfectly sweet coffee.

There was still that feeling of the other shoe waiting to drop, but he could deal with that when it happened.

“So, judging by the look on your face, I’d say congratulations are in order?” Outlaw questioned as he poured himself a cup, minus all the additions Zombie used.

“Thank you.” Zombie was humbled by his brother and grateful.

“For what?”

“For Heidi,” he said bluntly. “If not for you, I would’ve been closed off to what was right in front of my face.”

Outlaw blew off his words. His veep was uncomfortable with praise of any kind. He either ignored it or made a joke.

“I’m gonna send Croon and Teach to the hospital after breakfast, prez. Everyone’s being released today. Should they take separate vehicles?”

Zombie wasn’t sure why they’d take two vehicles to the same hospital. Outlaw gave him a pointed look when he didn’t respond.

He blew out an exaggerated, exhausted breath that was his way when he felt Zombie was being dense. Which seemed to be a lot lately.

“I just wondered after the conversation I overheard through the phone last night…” His words drifted off, and he seemed overly interested in his coffee.

Ah.

“No. One is fine.” He grinned over his mug.

“One? Really?”

“Yep. My woman’s gonna handle it.”

Outlaw barked a laugh, and Zombie couldn’t help but share the sentiment.

“Fuck yeah,” he cheered. “I told you she had the backbone needed for this life. And, well, it didn’t hurt that I planted a few ideas in her head.”

“You didn’t.”

Zombie had no doubt they were creative ideas at that.

“Yep, sure did. About time we had a first lady to rein in these hellions and put them in their place. We’ve been way too lenient.”

“Lenient? I wouldn’t say that. You yourself have plenty of black eyes and busted knuckles being on both ends of punishment.”

“Yeah, but for club girls and other clingers, it’s fucking summer camp around here, and it shows. Just look at Sherry. She should’ve been gone the second she overstepped. But she wasn’t, and here we are.”

Outlaw hit the nail on the head. It was true, they kept members in line, but everyone else did whatever they wanted and that needed to stop. They needed to be more uncompromising with the male non-members. And hang arounds too. Or stop letting ’em come around.

Heidi would handle the females.

Again, the thought of Heidi stepping into that role made him smile. When he’d met her, he would’ve sworn the MC life wasn’t for her, but he’d never been happier to be wrong about something in his life.

“What’s the status of Eureka?” He asked about the cleanup without saying the words, just in case Heidi was awake and within earshot. She’d said she didn’t need details, and he would respect that until she asked. Plus, they weren’t in church, so things were spoken of differently so that anyone listening not in the loop stayed that way.
