She did as he said as he went down on his knees with his hands up. Three Carabinieri kept their guns trained on him as the other higher ranking officer walked around him and put cuffs on his wrist. He was helped to stand. His rights were read to him and it was announced to his wife and kids he would be taken back to Rome to stand trial for murder, kidnapping, extortion and other criminal charges. Every man in the house or outside of it was forced to lay flat on the ground with his face down. And several others were arrested and thrown in waiting vans.
Giovanni was able to give one final look to his wife and offered her reassurance with a nod. She gave him a nod of understanding. His rock, his blue rose, she stood firm with their kids and showed no sign of weakness to the invaders. He could only give Eve a half-smile before he was forced from her into an armed police van and driven away.
It was a new year, and a new beginning.
It was the beginning of the end.
The day he knew would come for him eventually.
Chapter Thirteen
The Arrest
Mondello, Sicily
––––––––
THE MOMENT THE CARABINIERIloaded her husband and his men into the back of the transport van she sprung into action.
“Eve! Watch the kids.” Mirabella yelled over the children crying. She left Lorenza and Leeza on the floor. When she reached the next room several men came in with desperate looks on their faces.
“I need to call Domi!” she said. For the life of her she couldn’t remember where the phone was.
“Donna, I have him on the phone,” David said.
She took the mobile phone from his hand and the minute she heard Dominic’s voice she burst into tears.
“It’s okay. I know they have him. They have Nico and Renaldo too.”
“It’s happening. Isn’t it Domi? It’s happening. He always said it would happen. And it did,” Mirabella wept.
“It’s a coordinated strike. All of our people were scooped up in a sweep at the same time.”
“But, what about you? Are they coming for you?” Mirabella asked.
“Not yet. Stay there. I’m sending my men there to protect you. Wait for my call and speak to no one.”
