“Eh, Domi,” Catalina said.

Eve shook her head no. “I heard Zio Domi tell Papa that he wanted your baby to be his. Why did he say that if he is the father?”

She would never deny Armando as her son’s father but for Eve and the kids she had treaded lightly on the truth. She realized Eve was very aware of the dynamics in the family.

“Do you remember your uncle Armando?”

Eve nodded.

“He’s his father.”

“You loved him?” Eve asked.

“Very much,” Catalina said.

“And uncle Domi? Do you love him?”

“Very much,” Catalina said.

Eve stared at her. She nodded as if it made sense.

“I understand,” Eve began. “Zio Armando is dead, he’s dead because Zio Domi wanted to be the father of the baby. And you want Domi to be the Papa.”

“No. Eve. Domi didn’t—“

“It’s okay. I understand how death works now. People die for the family.”

“Eve? That’s not how death works.”

“For our family, it is.”

Before Catalina could continue the conversation, Eve walked out carrying Lorenza. Catalina glanced to the twins. They had put down the toy guns and were now playing with their Legos. She wanted to believe the children would grow strong no matter the changes in their lives. But she knew these days nothing was guaranteed. Not even life.
