“What about due process? The right to a speedy trial!” Mirabella asked.
“This isn’t an American judicial system. He is being charged under new Anti-Mafia laws, and that wheel of justice turns slow. Donna. If I may? We do have good news. We can move faster on the release of Nico. The case against him is empty. I am going before the Magistrate tomorrow.”
“And Renaldo?”
“He’s different,” Domi said.
“They are the same!” Mirabella said.
“Many of his crimes are connected to Giovanni. He is being named the underboss to Giovanni’s organization. Since Carlo’s death half of the charges have switched to be pinned on him. Renaldo is in it too deep for me to dig him out. I have a list of financial records the prosecutor wants to have turned over, including your company holdings. They need a paper trail to match the charges from the Générale and—“
Mirabella had heard enough. It had been a week since Giovanni’s arrest and nothing had been done to secure his safety. According to them nothing could be done.
“That’s enough,” she said.
The attorney fell silent. She got up from the chair and paced again.
“Gentleman, I had the conversation of the dutiful wife with you. Now we’re going to have a different conversation. As your Donna, I want the truth.”
Dominic cut his gaze to her.
“Dr. Sera has she seen Marietta? Have we moved forward on Gio’s plan for my sister?”
Dominic frowned.
“I know all about it. Now answer me.”
“The doctor is working with the Générale, and the prosecutor to help build her story against Giovanni and Renaldo.”
“Marietta! Tell me the truth!” Mirabella demanded.
“There is no truth. There is nothing to tell,” Dominic said.
Mirabella could not penetrate the wall of silence, so she gave up.
“Fine, tell me about the warden?” Mirabella asked. When they didn’t speak she paused from her pacing and glared at Dominic. “Tell me!”
“He doesn’t have any family. No wife, no kids, no mother or brother. He’s a lone wolf. It’s why his prison has been the choice for the anti-mafia police to contain gangs and the Camorra. He can’t be bought, manipulated, bribed or controlled.”
“Every man answers to someone. Who does he answer too?”
“There’s the President of the Campania. We could go as low as the Mayor of Naples.”
“No. We go to the top. I want dinner with the President of the Campania. I want it arranged. Is he still married?” Mirabella asked.
“Divorced, but he’s dating that popular actress now.” Dominic couldn’t remember her name.
“Kamilla Travoise,” the attorney answered.
“Actress? Really? I want to meet her.”
“That can be arranged.” Dominic said.
“Good. Now. What I’m going to ask you two are going to object. But understand this isn’t Mirabella, this is Giovanni’s wife asking. I know what I’m doing.”
“What are you doing?” Dominic narrowed his eyes on her.
“I want to meet the Russian. Tarzan.”
