I called her up, and she answered. “You’re calling me in the middle of the day. Is something wrong?”

I felt my shoulders relax, and my entire body sank into my seat.

“I’m fine. I just got out of a meeting with the Council.”

She was quiet for a moment before I heard papers shuffling around, and in a whisper she said. “Excuse me for a moment.” I heard a door shut and she spoke up a little louder. “What happened?”

“Were you in a meeting?” I asked, glancing at the time. It was just a little past ten now.

“Yeah, just a budget meeting, nothing important. What happened?”

I couldn’t help but smirk. “I pretty much told them to pull their heads out of their ass and figure this virus out.”

I could hear her starting to laugh. “You didn’t.”

“Yeah, I did.” I leaned my head back and listened to her laugh. I wanted her so badly. I knew that she only slept with me the other night because we were sure it would bring her magic out. But that wasn’t how it was for me.

“I should let you get back to your meeting.”

“Oh god, please don’t make me go back in there. You saved me.”

I smiled. “Oh yeah? Was Twinkie bothering you?”

I could envision her rolling her eyes. “Joshua, and no. He’s not here. My bosses discussed going over numbers, and I just wanted to get out. So, what did the Council even want from you?”

I sighed. “They asked if we were focused on having children and if I was getting laid.”

“Oh god, what did you say?”

“I told them it was none of their business and that maybe they should put more time in finding a solution for the virus rather than if I was getting laid or not.”

She laughed softly. “I’m sure they loved that.”

“Not really, but I don’t really care.”

“Oh, really? That’s a side of you I didn’t know existed.”

I raised an eyebrow at her. “What do you mean?”

“You were a good little soldier when we had our meeting. This just surprises me.”

I laughed. “Well, this good little soldier is married and doesn’t share details with anyone.”

She giggled, and I ached for her. I wanted to pull her into my arms and hold her close. I missed her and I just saw her last night.

“Shit, my boss is waving me back. I have to go. I’ll see you when I get home.”

She ended the line, and I stared at the building. I was half tempted to go back in there and continue yelling at the Council, but it wouldn’t change anything. They were all old and would never change their views on how they saw things.

Chapter 14 - Sam

I found myself a spot in the middle of the forest and tossed a blanket down. I had finished work early and decided to spend the rest of the day focusing on my magic. While sex hadn't brought it out like I thought it was going to, that didn't mean I was going to stop trying.

I sat down, leaned against a tree trunk, and took a deep breath in. I opened the books that I managed to find at the library and started to skim through them.

I quickly read that focus and deep breathing were necessary for this to work. Other parts mentioned staring at a spot and trying to push the magic out was another way. But everything said, unless I had unleashed it before, I couldn't just get it to come out. It took practice. It was like learning a new skill.

I flipped through a few more pages and felt a headache forming between my eyes. I felt like I was in quicksand. The more I searched, the less I understood. Katie hadn't been lying when she said there was a lot on magic. There were different types of welders and other varieties. There were various levels and spells. It was a lot of information, and my brain couldn't absorb it all.
