"What is this urgent message you called us here for?" Ralph asked, looking irritated.
Jay went into full explanation. He explained the glass, and us trying to figure out what my magic could do, which I could see would not please the Council.
"So you sat on this news?" one of them snapped angrily. "You knew she had magic, and you didn't tell us!?"
"We didn't want to bring it to your attention until we were entirely sure that Sam possesses the ability."
"What did the vision detail? Did you see each of them?" Jenissa asked, leaning forward. Her hands were knitted together as she looked interested.
I shook my head. "There were hundreds, and they came too quickly to remember the faces."
"When will you get your next one?" another asked.
Another one spoke up angrily. "This is important. You need to think of how you will save these women."
"You don't remember the faces? How do you not remember the faces? Think harder!"
They were all yelling at me, and I felt like I was being stood on. I didn't know how to do anything. I could hardly get control of my gift. How the hell was I going to save women I couldn't even see?
"Enough," Jay snapped. "I told you she had only one vision, and it was just now. They don't just come when you ask. If we had anything else to share, we would. We are giving this to you, so you can figure out what to do, not us."
I glanced at Jay, feeling protected as he stood next to me. The Council all leaned back and muttered to one another.
I felt Jay's hand rest on my lower back as he tugged me closer to him. I held back a smile, feeling cared for.
I never wanted this to end. I didn't want us to go our separate ways when the baby was born. I wanted to stay with him.
Chapter 17 - Jay
I glanced at Sam as I parked the car. We were in front of the town hall, where a party was put together to celebrate Sam's news. Word traveled quickly after we told the Council. It was just the next morning that she was getting phone calls from people she didn't even know, congratulating her.
I remembered her looking at me confused and asking how in the world they even got her number. I'm sure the Council gave it out, which irritated me. Shouldn't we have been the ones that decided who knew about this? Shouldn't we have been able to share the news?
We had both dressed up. Sam was wearing a deep navy blue dress with shimmer in it. She'd paired it with black heels and a small black purse. I had worn a nice pair of dress pants and a navy blue shirt to match her. I had combed my hair and shaved.
"How is your stomach doing?" I asked, knowing I found her in the bathroom most mornings. She had a pretty terrible case of morning sickness, which I was hoping would end soon.
She shrugged. "It's fine. It's only the mornings that it's been bothering me."
I looked back at the town hall, seeing the packed parking lot. There were more people here than I expected.
We both got out, and she linked her arm with mine as we headed inside. I held her arm tightly, watching her as we headed inside. I knew Sam wasn't a big fan of large parties or events.
As we got inside, I was stunned to find the place was packed. But more surprised to see Henrik waiting by the doors. He had his arms crossed as he leaned against the wall, his eyes on his sister.
"Sam!" he yelled her name, and Sam tensed up as she spotted him. "I heard about the great news. Though I would like to know why I didn't get told by my sister instead of through the grapevine."
Sam cringed as she offered her brother a smile. "In my defense, we weren't going to tell people until we were ready."
Henrik walked towards us and scowled. "I'm not like most people. I'm your brother. I'm a little hurt. How long have you known this?"
Sam swallowed. "A while." He reached out and pulled Sammy into a tight hug. "Just because I'm hugging you doesn't mean I'm happy. I'm still mad but can't stay mad when it's your special day. My little sister, the magic welder." He tightened the hug and squeezed Sam. I tensed up, staring at her stomach.
"There isn't a lot of welding going on," she grumbled in response. "And this." She waved her hand around the space. "Is a bit much. I don't need a party for this."
"It's not," Henrik said, shaking his head as he broke the hug. "And I planned this, so it's not. This is exciting news, Sam. This is great news for the pack and you guys as a couple. I'm sure even Jay can't argue that."
I couldn't. It was good news, and it looked good to both of us. And the pack as a whole. Having an Alpha married to a magic user was strong and concrete.
