He stared at her. “Is that okay with you? If I help you?”

She snorted. “Of course it is. I’m not mad at you. I get why you yelled at me. What I did was stupid, but you should know, I’d have done the same thing if it was you getting swarmed by the enemy. I’d run outside.”

Robin drew in a sharp breath. “No. If that ever happens, stay safe. I’ll be fine. Killing me isn’t easy to do.”

“Yeah, it’s almost as if you’re a Fae prince or something,” I said sardonically.

Demi laughed and grabbed her ribs. “Ouch. Don’t make me laugh. It hurts. The idea of Robin being a prince is hysterical.”

Robin let out a rather forced chuckle. “Yeah, funny. As if, right?”

I nearly groaned.

Robin went to Demi and swept her up in his arms smoothly. “Let’s get you downstairs. Your father is pacing a hole in the floor down there. I think he’s excited and nervous to see you.”

“Same,” she said, putting her arms around his neck. She gave him a chaste kiss on the cheek. “Thanks for helping to lessen my injuries. I hurt a lot less now. And thanks for the lift downstairs.”

“Anytime,” he said before clearing his throat. He carried her out of the room.

Astria came closer to me, keeping her voice low. “So, are they an item?”

“Why does everyone keep thinking that?” I asked.

She blinked at me rapidly. “Aunt Rachael, tell me you’re joking. Look at how he is with her.”

“He protects her like Arch does,” I returned. “He’s been like that since he met her almost eighteen years ago.”

“Uh, Arch hasneverlooked at her the way Robin does,” said Astria. She grinned. “Kind of like how Drest has always looked at you.”

I laughed and put my arm around her shoulders. “Is Stratton good to you?”

“Yes,” she said. “I can’t believe he’s the same guy from when I was little.”

I nodded. “Yep. He was overprotective of you then too. We should head downstairs.”

“For sure,” she replied. “Because if Uncle Drest figures out Robin is into Demi, I have a feeling it won’t go over well. He went at Stratton when he found us in bed together.”

My eyes widened. “He found you in bed with his cousin?”

She nodded. “I thought he’d kill Stratton for a minute there. Honestly, it’s kind of touch and go still.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle.

ChapterThirty-Eight

Drest

Drest didanother lap around Robin’s massive lower level. The Van Helsings and the local wolf pack had insisted on handling cleaning up the mess outside. They’d shoved him through the door of the house, encouraging him to see his mate and daughter.

Rachael and Astria had been up with Demi for nearly an hour, and Drest couldn’t help but worry something was wrong. Had whatever Gil and Nile been doing to her left lasting damage? Was she in pain? Was she dead?

Stratton had yanked Drest off the staircase more than once over the past hour, telling him to sit down and wait.

That wasn’t easy to do.

Goodfellow had been equally anxious and had seized the moment to dart by Stratton while Drest had been making his last try to get up the stairs.

“Sit down,” said Stratton. “You’re giving me a headache. She’s fine.”
