I couldn't stop worrying completely though, because the last time I was here like this, Fressia had dragged in a bleeding and half-dead Eshim. We hadn't been anywhere as close back then, and I didn't want to imagine how I'd feel if something happened to him now.
"He'll be fine," Archer said, pulling me out of my thoughts. Then Gunner grabbed my hair and tugged at it to make sure I wasn't worrying about Eshim anymore.NowI was worrying about getting a bald patch.
"Yeah, I hope so."
"Have you been to the demon realm yet?" Kat asked, and I shook my head.
"He took me to a cabin in the woods for our long weekend, but we haven't been anywhere else yet." We'd been too busy at work to think about going anywhere.
"Well, whenever you do, it's a wonderful place. Like kinda gothic but also very cozy."
"No fire and brimstone?" I teased, and she snorted.
"Nope. The flames are blue, though, and every demon has their own private suite."
"Makes sense. I look forward to seeing it."
"You've seen his true form, though, right?" Archer asked as he took Gunner from me. My hair thanked him.
My cheeks heated up at the thought, and Kat broke into chuckles.
"Look at him. He's more than seen it."
"Shut up."
"Don't worry—you're not alone. Fressia is sexy as fuck in her true form too. She usually only puts on the human illusion when we have guests or we're going out."
"Lux too, though that's mostly because Gunner loves playing with his tail."
"How did you react? The first time you saw his real form?" I asked, and Archer winced.
"Not well. In my defense, he was between me and Gunner. My dad instincts were going haywire."
I winced in sympathy, and reached over to pat his arm. "I'm glad you guys figured things out. Lux is good for you."
"Eshim's good for you too. He makes you leave work at work, and he's been talking you up all over the office."
"He's what?" I asked, surprised.
"Oh yeah. Rita told me he goes down to the design floor everyday and chats with everyone. Spends the whole time singing your praises. I think he was annoyed the others believed Martin's lies and wants to set the record straight."
"Oh."
No one had ever done something like that for me. I knew I wasn't very good at letting people in, and I usually didn't care what they thought of me. But to think Eshim didn't just care but wanted everyone to know what he thought of me...
"I think you broke him," Archer said, making Kat snicker, and breaking me out of my musings.
I rolled my eyes at him, and snatched Gunner away from him, making him laugh.
"You're my best friend now, Gunner. I know you won't tease me."
Gunner immediately grabbed a handful of my hair and started tugging, which made them both start laughing again.
Sighing miserably, I pulled Gunner close, letting him cuddle on my chest as he continued tugging my hair. I hoped Eshim's magic allowed him to repair human hair, because I had a feeling I'd need it.
"How about we freshen up a little and then order some takeout? We can all eat together when they get back, and then you can leave so I can fu—" her eyes fell to Gunner, "—n my girlfriend."
I snorted. "You want to fun your girlfriend?"
