"Volunteer," Isabel and I said in response.
"Hayden said you might need help," Ryker said. "Said his grandma's tea might run long and make you late."
He had? My gaze went to Hayden, and I felt myself soften.
Joan stuck her head out once more and pointed her spoon at the guys.
"I take it back," she said. "My dishes are piling up, and I've never had faster dishwashers."
They seemed to straighten as one.
"You can come back." Her eyes focused on Santino as she added, "Just no messing with my cooking. Understand?"
"Yes, Ma'am," he said, and once she'd gone back in, he looked at me with a smile. "I'll win her over."
"I'm sure you will," I said.
Santino kissed my cheek then went back with Ryker and Elliot into the kitchen.
"I better go check the tables," Izzy said, giving my elbow a squeeze. "You two take your time. I think some seats just opened up by the window."
With a wink, she left, and Hayden and I went to take the newly vacated seats.
"Sorry about that," Hayden said.
"It's fine," I said. "Joan really is a marshmallow. I'm sure the guys will be fine."
"Yeah, but I had it covered," he said. "They didn't need to come."
"About that," I said, "I don't think I said it before, but thank you. This was such a wonderful surprise."
Hayden waved me off. "It was nothing."
"Yes, it was."
"Maggie, you do this all the time. I served a few people food. Don't make it more than it is."
"I'm really touched that you came to help."
I looked up, knowing my heart was in my eyes, but unable to hold back the feeling rushing through me. He'd come because he knew I wouldn't be able to be here. His friends had followed and keptThe Little Spoonrunning smoothly.
"This means a lot to me," I said, voice full of sincerity. "Thank you, Hayden."
His lips lifted into a slow smile.
"Got to do what I can to get that #1 boyfriend spot," he said. "How am I doing?"
"Good," I said softly. "Very good."
He nodded, staring into my eyes. "Then why do you sound like you're going to cry?"
"Do I?" I startled, forcing a laugh to lighten the mood. "If I do, they'll definitely be happy tears."
"Then mission accomplished."
Hayden stood.
"Better go see if Isabel needs any help," he said.
