The Smiths.

Like it? Was he joking?

"I think every girl in here liked it," I said on a laugh.

"Don't really care what they think," he said. "Just you."

"I loved it," I said quietly. Looking up at him, I shook my head. "Sorry your ex had to show up and make a scene."

Hayden rolled his eyes. "She always liked doing that. Probably one of the reasons she was with me in the first place. The Davenports get a lot of attention."

He shot me a smile.

"I don't think she was counting on you, though."

I shrugged, trying to get my heart under control.

"You want to go find the guys and hang out?" he asked.

"No, I think I should go," I said.

"Really?"

I nodded. "You have fun."

Hayden threw me a concerned look. "Are you okay?"

"Of course," I said.

"I'll walk you out to your car."

"That's not necessary."

"It's dark," he said. "You're my girlfriend. I'm walking you to your car."

He looked determined. There was no point in arguing. Once there, Hayden opened the door for me and stood to the side.

"Thanks again for coming, Maggie," he said.

"Thanks for inviting me," I said.

"Hey." Before I got inside, he leaned over and placed a kiss against my temple. "I'll see you tomorrow at the engagement party."

I nodded but couldn't respond.

To be honest, I didn't know how to.

My heart wanted one thing, but I'd chickened out in telling Hayden what that was after his remark.

It almost felt real.

Yeah, I thought with a sigh. Because it was.

At least for me.

CHAPTER 23

"Magnolia, why am I looking at a video of you and Hayden Davenport kissing like it's the end of the world?"
