"You're right," he said. "I was."
"You seem more like a Dorothy to me, though."
Hayden rolled his eyes as I laughed, but I couldn’t help it. This was just hilarious. I didn't see how this day could get any better. It took me a moment to get my laughter under control, but once I did, I turned back to Hayden.
He popped an eyebrow. "You finished?"
I nodded solemnly. "Yes, I think so."
"Okay," Hayden said. "In that case…"
He scooted closer, leaving only a breath of distance between us, and any remaining giggles dried up real fast.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Just working on our chemistry."
I gulped as his hand went to my cheek. "Chemistry?"
He nodded. "Yeah, my cousins will be watching for a sign of weakness. And Gigi's smarter than any of them, so we'll have to do a convincing job."
I didn't know what he was saying.
"The way you look at me is good," Hayden murmured.
My eyes shot to his.
"Anyone would think you're attracted to me."
Goodness.
"And your reactions are so natural. If I didn't know this was all an act, even I might be fooled."
I had to say something.
Hayden was staring at me waiting for my response.
"I like how you look at me, too," I said.
Gah.
Quickly I tacked on, "I mean, it's very convincing."
Hayden nodded as his stare stayed locked on my face. "I think we should try kissing again. We only did it once. It might be good to have more practice."
"Actually, you kissed me twice." His expression was surprised, so I went on. "At my sister's wedding. You kissed me then, too."
He waved that off. "That wasn't a real kiss."
"It wasn't?"
"No, it was more like a hello."
Well,I thought, feel free to give me as many hellos as you'd like.
"We should definitely try it again."
Was it getting hotter in this apartment, or was it just me? It felt like someone had turned up the temperature as Hayden's gaze dipped to my lips.
