His cut worried me, not because I thought it was deep, but because of the possibility of infection. He didn’t seem to be running a fever, though, which was good.

By the time I turned into the parking garage next to Drake’s building, my nerves were shot, and my entire body ached with fatigue. It was barely noon, and all I wanted to do was crawl into bed, curl up next to Drake, and sleep for the next twenty-four hours straight.

I gently shook Drake awake, and we made our way inside. There was no hiding when we entered the lobby that Drake was hurt.

“What happened?” Yul jogged over, concern showing on his face. “Were you in an accident? Should I call an ambulance?”

“It’s a long story,” Drake answered. “Could you give Dr. Birenberg a call and ask him to come?”

“Of course.” Yul looked at me. “Do you want my help to get upstairs?”

“No, thank you, Yul. I can walk.” Drake sighed. “Let the rest of the staff know what’s going on.”

As we rode up to the penthouse, Drake reached over to tuck a stray hair behind my ear, his touch making my skin tingle. “I want you to promise me something.”

“What’s that?”

“That you won’t beat yourself up over this.” His expression was serious.

I caught his hand and kissed the palm. “I won’t. This is all Dale’s fault.”

Drake made the call to the police, and by the time he finished, Dr. Birenberg had arrived.

While the doctor worked on Drake, I sent a text to Carson, London, Benjamin, and Stellan, explaining everything and told them to be careful until Dale was caught.

I moved to Drake’s side, catching the last part of his argument with the doctor against going to the hospital.

He glanced up at me. “I’m fine, lass.”

I looked at Dr. Birenberg. “Is he okay?”

He sighed as he stood. “I’m ninety-five percent sure that he’s fine.”

“And the other five percent?” I asked.

“That’s the reason I want him to go to the hospital. X-rays. There’s a chance he has some cracked bones, maybe broken ones.”

I looked at Drake, raising an eyebrow in question.

“If I have any swelling or the pain gets worse, I’ll go, but I think I need to rest more than I need x-rays.”

“Stay hydrated. And if you think you need anything stronger than over-the-counter, you’ll need to go to the hospital to get it,” he said.

“Agreed,” Drake said. He looked at me. “Will that be acceptable?”

I glared at him, but was thankful for the snark in his question. He was feeling better. “It’ll do.”

As Dr. Birenberg gathered his things and left, another set of guests came in. I hadn’t asked Carson, London, Benjamin, or Stellan to come, but I was happy they did.

I couldn’t deny it felt damn good to have our family around us.

SEVENTY-SIX

DRAKE

It wasgood to see Uncle Ben and Stellan. Everyone brought food, which was great since neither Maggie nor I felt like cooking.

It was closing in on eight o’clock before they left. Uncle Ben reminded us to call them if we needed anything.
