He could’ve seen me play before. That made sense.

“She’ll realise it was not a coincidence you were there to save her.” Stellan joined the conversation. “That you were following her.”

I pressed my hand to my mouth as everything I ate earlier churned in my stomach.

No, no, no.

This couldn’t be happening. I couldn’t have misjudged Drake so badly. The man I trusted with everything when I was most vulnerable had been lying to me this whole time.

FORTY-THREE

DRAKE

Something was wrong.

When Maggie came in and said that she felt ill, she was pale, and her expression strained. Of course, we left, but as we made our way to the lobby, I started realizing I wasn’t seeing the entire picture. The way she moved away from my hand when I tried to guide her out of the elevator. Maybe she didn’t like being touched when she was sick.

Maybe something else was going on, and I was just too dense to figure it out.

She didn’t look at me or say a word the entire drive home. Every time I glanced her way, she was staring out the window, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her entire body tense.

By the time we stepped off the elevator at my penthouse, she had regained her color but still wouldn’t look at me. I was at a loss for what to do. Belle never had a problem telling me exactly what was on her mind. Maggie hadn’t taken the opportunity of a twenty-five-minute car ride to offer a hint.

Maybe I was reading too much into the details. It had been over a decade since I was in a relationship. I could be rusty.

As soon as we were inside, Maggie headed for her room, leaving me to wonder whether I should go after her. Deciding that space was probably wise, I went to my master bedroom. I wasn’t sure where the rest of the night would go since it was hardly late enough for me to sleep, but I thought I’d give her a few minutes before checking in.

Instead, she came to me.

I opened at the knock, surprised to see she hadn’t changed, hadn’t even taken off her coat. And then I saw the suitcases behind her.

“Maggie?”

“I think it’s time for me to go.” Her gaze was fixed over my shoulder, as if she couldn’t bear to look at me.

“I don’t understand.”

Now her eyes found mine, and the anger and hurt I saw shocked me.

“I saw a picture of you and Stellan…and a woman in a wedding dress.”

My stomach dropped. Stellan kept a wedding photo in his study where I wouldn’t inadvertently run into it.

“It was your wedding, right?”

I nodded. “Belle was Stellan’s niece.”

“She looks like me.” Maggie shook her head. “No,Ilook likeher. She wasn’t much younger in that picture than I am now, was she?”

“No.” The words stuck in my throat. This was bad.

“Is that why you started stalking me?”

Fuck.

“What?”

“Please don’t lie to me anymore.” Her voice was quiet, and I wished she’d just yell at me. “I heard you talking to Ben and Stellan about it.”
