“Breakfast for lunch?”

She shrugged. “Why not? I'd eat breakfast anytime of the day. It's my favorite.”

I smiled. “Which waffles are your favorite?”

“The Nutella strawberry ones.” She peeked at me over her menu. “But I think you'd like the maple bacon one.”

“Done.” I closed my menu and laid it down.

She cocked an eyebrow. “Wait, I thought you didn't eat carbs and sugars?”

I scoffed. “In the last two and a half weeks, I've eaten pancakes, cookies, donuts, and now waffles. So I'd say what I used to do is no longer relevant.”

“The donuts were your idea. I was fine to pass on the pastries that all the kids touched and then put back.”

I laughed. “In my defense, I didn't witness that.”

The waitress appeared at the table and took our orders. Once she grabbed our menus and walked away, I leaned forward, bracing my forearms on the table.

“Do you like your job at the hospital?”

“Yeah.” She nodded, and then her shoulders lifted in a slight shrug. “Sometimes it can get a bit boring, but I like that there are enough tasks to do that I can change it up when I want to.”

“But it's only part-time?”

I listened as she explained how she splits the hours with Nicole, and her hope to take over Nicole’s hours when she graduates nursing school. The waitress appeared again, delivering our waffles. I couldn't believe how huge they were.

A chuckle slipped through her lips. “Don't worry, I never finish mine.”

“This could feed two people.” I shook my head and cut off a piece before popping it into my mouth.

“The girls would love these.”

I nodded. “Yeah, they would. We should bring them sometime.”

Her brows rose enough that I caught it. I wasn't going to correct what I'd said. I wanted to show her what being with me would look like. Occasional lunch dates and breakfast with my kids were part of the package.

“I'd love that.” She smiled and forked a piece of her waffle.

My chest suddenly felt tight as an image of the two of us here with Nikki and Alice popped into my head. I could see it so clearly.

Chapter Twenty-Four

IZZY

“He dances...and sings.”Logan scoffed. “All the time.”

I laughed at his descriptions of Zack, like it was the most ridiculous thing ever, as we walked into the lobby of the hospital. I shot him a sideways look. “Um, I dance too.” I knew for a fact I tended to move to music only I could hear.

His lips lifted into the sexiest of smirks before he leaned down, his mouth close to my ear. “Yeah, but I like to watch your ass sway when you dance.”

Heat flooded my face as I thought back to the sexy things he’d said to me when he changed my tire. I'd never been with a guy like him. Someone who was so forthcoming in a flirty sort of way.

He straightened and shrugged his shoulders. “I don't find Zack's all that interesting.”

I giggled. Never would have thought the grumpy man from that first week would end up being so funny, too.

“About time.”
