Maggie's voice resonated, and I looked up as she descended the last stair in front of us.
A wide smile broke out on her face as she took the last few steps toward us. “Decided to take my advice, after all?” she directed at Logan.
Logan rolled his eyes. “We grabbed lunch.”
“I knew I sensed something last night.”
I shifted on my feet, suddenly feeling nervous about how she would feel about this. Logan glanced over at me before turning his attention back to Maggie.
“Don't make her feel uncomfortable.”
She sent me a warm smile. “I think it's great.” She glanced down quickly at the phone in her hand. “I have surgery in a few, so gotta run.”
I let out the breath I was holding once she turned and walked away. I hadn't realized until now that I cared how she would feel about this. But I respected her and appreciated her giving me the opportunity to nanny for them. I still didn't want to do anything to mess it up.
Logan's hand landed on the small of my back again, and my body relaxed.
“You good?”
“Yeah.” I tilted my head back to look up at him. “Thank you for lunch.”
“Of course. I enjoyed it.” His hand fell away, and I instantly missed his touch. “I'll see you tonight.”
“Do you mind if I come to soccer practice?”
He raised a brow. “Of course I don't mind. But you sure you don't need that time to yourself before you have to be with them all night?”
I shrugged. It wasn't like they were a handful or anything. I found being with them fun and enjoyable. “They asked me if I would come, and I like watching them play.”
He searched my face before his lips lifted into a smile. “Want to come to the house and then ride over with us?”
“Sure.” I wasn't sure if he was thinking of the crowded lot or if he wanted me with him. But his grin said he liked my answer.
A moment of awkward silence engulfed us. It was obvious we were both treading lightly, but I didn't care at that moment. I stepped forward and popped up on my tiptoes, pressing my lips against his cheek.
His gaze darkened as he looked down at me, and I didn't miss the way his hand twitched like he wanted to reach out. The fact that I knew he wanted to pull me to him and explore my mouth made my core tighten with anticipation.
“See you this afternoon,” he said, taking a step back.
I nodded, and with a final wave, turned toward the corridor that would lead to my office.
The next three hours dragged by. I struggled to focus on anything I needed to do. All I could think about was Logan. The way he kissed me in the front seat of his truck, our date and how he listened so intently, even how my body responded when he placed his hand on the small of my back and leaned down to whisper in my ear.
I was still replaying our date as I made my way through the hospital, ready to get out of there and see Logan again. I shifted impatiently on my heels as I waited for the elevator that would take me down to my car. Finally, the doors opened and I stepped on.
“Hold please,” a voice hollered a second before Maggie appeared with a bright smile and jogged through the open doors. “I actually think I'm going to make it to their soccer practice this time.”
“They'll be so excited.” I knew she was worried she would miss another one. “Is this weird?” I finally asked after a moment. I wasn't one to dance around difficult topics.
Her brows pulled together. “No, why would it be?”
Seriously? Where did I start? “Cause I'm your nanny and now I'm, um... You know, seeing your ex.”
She chuckled. “Logan and I have a good relationship. I want him to be happy, and if that's with you, I'm all for it.” She huffed. “I mean, it sucks we're going to need to find another nanny. Again. But...” she trailed off as she stared at me.
My face must have given away my surprise, and her expression turned sympathetic.
“Eventually, probably sooner than you realize, you're going to want to spend time alone with Logan when I have the girls. Not have to be at my place.”
