Reggie’s voice was thick with emotion, and Gage slid from the booth to head for the parking lot. Samuel threw money on the table and jogged after him.

“Where should we meet you?”

“I’m at the gas station two miles up the rode from where you are.”

Gage was already behind the wheel, and Samuel was pulling his seatbelt on in the passenger seat.

“Already on our way. We’ll be there in two minutes or less.”

Gage squealed the tires racing out of the parking lot and onto the road that would lead to Reggie.

As they pulled into the gas station, Reggie didn’t even wait for the car to stop moving before he jerked open the back passenger door and jumped in.

“Where now?” Gage asked.

“Fuck!” Reggie shouted. “I want to go back for her.”

“Is she alive?”

Reggie nodded. “Yeah. I don’t think they’ll kill her.”

Samuel glanced in the mirror. “It’s a terrible idea to go back. Where do they think you’re going now?”

Reggie dragged a hand down his face. “I’ve got a shift at The Cage. I called in sick for my last one so I could go to D.C.”

“Then it’s probably wise if we drop you off there. Gage can go home and check on Kenzie, and I’ll stay close in case you need my help.”

Gage wasn’t going to argue with a plan that let him go back to Kenzie. He missed her, and was finding that he hated field work. It had grown tiresome years ago, boring almost, but he never hated it until now.

But he would do what he had to in order to keep Reggie safe, and then he was going to retire for good and spend the rest of his life making Kenzie happy in and out of the bedroom. Mostly in if he had his way.

Chapter 27

Kenzie

Kenzie’s shoulders sagged in relief as she read the text from Gage. He was on his way back to Patrick and Austin’s house.

She’d been on pins and needles waiting to hear from him for hours, and it was all she could do not to blow his phone up or have an emotional meltdown over not knowing where the fuck he was.

With the knowledge that he was safely on his way back gave her the ability to her headphones on and pull her laptop back into her lap to listen to more songs for Skylar’s wedding.

She was sitting in the den at Patrick and Austin’s, and had gotten very little work done after her attempt at a nap, and she yawned as the track changed to a slow song.

The sensation of someone else sitting on the couch with her made her jump, and she squealed as she tore her headphones off.

“What have I said about wearing those things on full volume when you’re alone?”

She didn’t care that Gage was scolding her. He was here. Setting the computer aside, she crawled into his lap and inhaled his scent.

“You’re home.”

He laughed and brushed hair back from her face.

“You missed me.”

She nodded. “Always. I hate that we live in different places.”

“So we’ll change that. There are lots of options.”
