“I know there’ll be food vendors coming, but I didn’t see the harm in being prepared since we’ll be here for the whole day. ”

I smile. “I hope you don’t get bored. Hey, maybe I can set you up with a canvas and some paints.”

He laughs out loud. “I don’t have Ollie’s talents, unfortunately. But I came prepared. I have my laptop with me.”

“Laptop? You won’t be working, will you? You’re on a holiday.”

“Um.” Brax vigorously shakes an orange juice bottle before pouring some into two paper cups. “I’ll be surfing the net or watching a movie.”

“Good luck with that. Coverage here is patchy. Pretty annoying if you’re gonna watch videos.”

He makes a face. “I forgot about that. Maybe I’ll just watchyouand learn something new.”

I inhale sharply, feeling like I’m at a fork in the road.

This is it. Either be brave and take steps towards a possible fling with Brax or get scared and retreat yet again.

Though nerve-wracking, choosing the former is easy.

“If you can give me some sort of warning before you watch me, please do so,” I say.

“Why?”

I smile coquettishly as I take a sip of my juice. “So I can make myself pretty first.”

Brax freezes, his hand in the air holding a piece of bread. He remains like that for a long second before he lets out a snicker. “Toying with me again, are you?” He pops the bread in his mouth.

“Nah,” I say with a gushy breath. “I decided you might be the best candidate for my fling experiment, after all.”

He stops mid-chew before resuming at a much slower pace. “You’re a hoot,” he says dryly.

I toss my hair. “Why did you bring me breakfast?”

“Because…” He shrugs. “I wanted to change your mind about not wanting to sleep with me.”

“I’m glad.” I grab Emory’s ham and cheese croissant and tear off a piece. “Have you tried one of these before?” I push a piece into his mouth. My breath catches as my finger zings from grazing the side of his lips. “God, are you electrified or something?”

“I think it’s you,” he answers, his eyes wide as he stares into mine.

“Or… us,” I murmur.

“But you said it’s complicated.”

“Yeah. But it’s only a fling.”

“Right,” he breathes. “Flings don’t have to be complicated.”

“They shouldn’t be.”

We continue to look into each other’s eyes, and my whole body is tingling. Is it like this for everyone when they feel strong physical attraction for another? What have I been missing?

“Joey…” Brax places his palm on my cheek and swipes my lips with his thumb.

I shiver in delight. If he could make me feel like this with just that touch…

“There’s a complication on my part as well,” he says, “but I’ll make it go away if I have to.”

“What complication?”
