Dad grins. “Great! You can be the designated driver on our way back. You shouldn’t be drinking alcohol after taking medication.”

“No worries,” I say with a chuckle.

If only there were something I could take for my nerves—or my broken heart.

Moonstruck Tastes is already bursting at the seams by the time we get there. So many people have come that guests have spilled out into the garden.

“Joey!” Theo, wearing his disguise, makes his way to me. “Feeling better?”

“Yes, thanks. What’s with going incognito?” I ask in a low voice.

“Roger warned me earlier that a few out-of-towners will be here today for Ollie, who’s now famous in the region. I didn’t want to take the spotlight away from him.”

I place a hand on his arm. “Aww, that’s very sweet of you.”

“It’s good to not be the centre of attention at a big party,” he says with a chuckle before bringing his mouth close to my ear. “How are you feeling about Brax leaving?”

Unbidden, I inhale sharply. “Sad, of course. I’ll miss Ollie so much. I doubt I’ll meet another child prodigy such as him in my lifetime.”

“I said Brax, not Ollie.”

“Oh.” I run my fingers through my hair. “I’m also sad that he’s leaving.”

“And?”

“And, what?”

“And that’s it between the two of you?”

“Yeah.”

Theo stares at me for a long moment. “Are you sure?”

“Yes. Where’s your girlfriend?”

“Are you not liking my questions?” he asks with a frown.

“What are you talking about?” I say with a downward wave of my hand. “I’m just wondering why you’re not with your girlfriend.”

“You know that we avoid being seen together when I’m incognito or people might recognise me.”

Yes, I do know that. “That’s why I’m not mentioning her name,” I point out. “Anyway, how’s the house build going?”

He arches a brow. “You know, if a person is trying to avoid a topic, it usually means it’s an emotionally charged one.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I cross my arms.

“Okay, okay. I see now that it’s a sore topic. I was just wondering if I could help you guys find some alone time tonight. I didn’t realise that…it’s become emotional for you.”

I let out a sigh. “Thank you. What we had has run its course. It had to because… he’s leaving,” I say with a catch in my throat.

“Oh, Joey.” Theo drapes a comforting arm around my shoulder. “I’m sorry.”

“Excuse me,” says an angry voice behind us.

I swivel to see Brax glowering at Theo before he flicks his gaze towards me. “Is this man bothering you?” he asks.

It takes me a second to understand why he threw that question at me. “No,” I say with a laugh.
