This was serious shit. This could be the night. God, I hoped this was the night. I glanced down at her. “Ready?” I asked.
“Ready.”
My hand on the small of her back felt too right. How she’d fit right beneath my chin when I held her as we danced made it feel like she had been made for me.
And when she asked as we got into the truck, “Do you have any condoms?” I was sure of it. I could love this woman.
That was the last thing I’d ever imagined was going to come out of her mouth. The question threw me off balance for a good few seconds, but I was quick to recover. “No, but I’ll get some.”
She nodded as I fired up Drew’s diesel engine and headed for the glow of lights on the horizon. My Mecca, an all night gas station that I hoped sold condoms. Life was good. And that was all because of Heather.

Heather
Yes, it was bold to tell him to get condoms, but my mind was made up.
Maybe it was partially the beer talking, quieting my insecurities and inhibitions, but I’d decided I was going to enjoy David Strickland’s finer points while he was still in town.
I needed to purge all memory of my ex, the last man I’d had sex with two years ago, out of my body and my mind.
David was well equipped to be just the man to do it. At least I hoped he was.
As my hands trembled, I couldn’t get the keypad code right for the door of the condo. It wasn’t my place and even after a week I still struggled with it sometimes.
Tonight I really wasn’t in the mood to waste time fighting with it.
Eventually I managed to concentrate long enough to get the door open and the moment I did, I jumped David. Literally. I jumped up, wrapped my arms and my legs around him and smashed my mouth against his.
He caught me with both hands on my butt and turned to brace me against the wall. With one hand still holding me up, he managed to close and bolt the door with the other.
This is what I had been missing out on by not having a man in my life. Someone to have sex with. Someone to worry about my security and double lock the door for my safety. Not equal tasks by any means, but I guess one was necessary for us to move on to the other.
David swept his cowboy hat off his head and tossed it onto the table just inside the door before supporting me with both hands again.
He groaned as his tongue breached my lips.
My back pressed against the wall, I answered his groan.
This was hot. The man couldn’t wait to kiss me until we’d gotten all the way inside.
Oh, wait, it had been me who’d kissed him. But still, he was all in. Definitely a willing participant.
“Bed?” I asked, pulling away so I could speak and breathe.
This manly act was sexy and all, but I knew there was a king-sized bed in the other room that we’d be much more comfortable in. And there, without having to hold me up, David would have the use of both his hands.
“Where?” he gasped.
“Down the hall.”
He grunted in reply. He had been reduced to single word sentences and grunts. I didn’t mind one bit.
The less he talked, the less likely we’d find something to disagree on. Now that we’d landed on common ground, I didn’t want one of our frequent arguments to mess it up.
He could have let me walk to the bedroom. He didn’t. He carried me there and I was fine with that.
I could feel his erection through his jeans, rubbing right at the juncture of my thighs.
