I chewed on my lower lip and debated on how much I should tell her. “Okay, I’ll admit things got a bit out of hand.”

“Did you or did you not get shot at when you walked into the middle of a sting operation?”

A sigh escaped me when I noticed Jana’s dark gray aura. I had frightened her badly. “I did. Thankfully, Tomas was a bad shot.”

Jana threw her hands up. “Like that’s a good thing?”

“I’m sorry I scared you.”

Harry grinned. “The cops are saying a Ninja Nun assaulted Detective Callaghan and locked him in the fighting cage.”

“Ninja Nun? Are you kidding me?” I was totally bumfuzzled.

“That’s what Tom heard on the police scanner,” Harry replied.

“Well, hell. I was wearing a habit and there might have been some karate involved.”

Jana planted her hands on her hips. “How much karate?”

“Enough to get Dutch in the cage.” I smiled at the memory. It had felt so good to kick his ass.

Jana rubbed her forehead as if she suddenly had a headache. “You need to lay low for a while. My job offer is still open.”

“I’ll take you up on the part-time position, but saving critters is my calling.” I kept a wary eye on the helicopters.

“I’m not denying you were given your abilities for a reason, but they won’t do the animals any good if you’re in jail or dead.”

Jana had a valid point. Getting shot at wasn’t on my bucket list. “I’ll be more careful in the future.”

Harry slapped his thighs and guffawed loudly.

I gave him the stink eye.

“No, you won’t.” Jana held out her hand for Tinkerbell to sniff. “Is this the dog you were hired to find?”

“Yes. Her name is Tinkerbell. The jerk was going to use her as a bait dog.”

Jana rubbed Tinkerbell’s ears. “There’s a special place in hell for those bastards.”

“This guy is fighting more than animals,” I added with a shudder.

Jana’s eyes widened in horror. “Men?”

“Oh yeah.” I grimaced. “By the amount of blood in the cage and the finger, I think more than one person was killed.”

“Which explains the police interest,” Harry commented.

I smacked my forehead. “Crap! The security cameras.”

“Relax. Samson released a small electromagnetic pulse and disabled all the cameras in the area. Including the police dash cams. He also jammed the TV news feeds,” Harry replied a bit too calmly.

“What?” My stomach knotted in horror. Not only was Samson Harry’s brother, he also worked for the CIA. “He just happened to be in the area, and out of the goodness of his heart he decided to help me?”

“Not quite. He needs your talents for one of his ops.” Harry kicked at the dirt and wouldn’t meet my gaze.

Samson was a ruthless sonovabitch and did whatever was necessary to complete his missions. “What kind of ops?”

Harry shot me a worried look. “He needs you to control twelve endangered white tigers at a drug kingpin’s stronghold.”
