She leans forward and whispers in my ear, “No.”

I hear the wrapper being torn. “Are you eating my chocolate?”

She smiles, hiding whatever’s in her mouth. “Maybe.”

“Come on, bunny,” I sulk in my sadness on purpose. “Please just give me a bite.”

“Did I just find your weakness?” she asks, staring at me in the rearview mirror. And I nod. But I’m not nodding because of the chocolate.

“Get up here. I’m not a taxi.”

She climbs back to her princess seat as I say, “Thank you.” She bites my chocolate bar in front of me. “Hey!” I reach for it, swerving the car as she laughs. I have a good hold on her wrist as I straighten the car. She drops the chocolate by accident, but she has melted chocolate between her fingers, so I bring her fingers to my mouth and suck the chocolate off.

“Grey,” she laughs. “You’re so desperate.”

She’s staring at me as I lick her fingers. She can’t stop giggling. I don’t lick off all the chocolate because if I don’t stop now, I’ll start licking the rest of her. I release her arm, and she takes another bite.

“You’re a chocolate hogger. I’ll remember this.” I point at her, shaking my head.

She leans in and demands, “Open your mouth.” I don’t listen, but she brings the chocolate to my lips anyway.

I take a bite and ask, “What are you doing?”

She shoves more into my mouth and says, “Feeding you because you’re a big baby.”

I laugh because damn. “Do you want the last bite?” I ask with my mouth full.

She leans back in her seat and says, “I thought you’d never ask.”

When she starts licking the same fingers I just got done sucking on, my jaw clenches. If I knew this stupid three-hour drive was going to be the start of a new yearning, I would have jumped on that damn bus. Fuck, I would’ve chased after it.

She plays a few songs that she knows every word to. When she starts dancing in her seat, I wonder if she’d be doing this without me here. Yeah, I determine that she would be. Right now, I’m a fly on the wall. When she runs her hand down my arm, I try not to flex.Don’t be that fucking guy.

After a few songs of her belting her lungs out, I turn it down and ask, “Did you notice that Matt played like shit tonight?”

She is out of breath when I notice how hard she’s sifting through her memories of the game. “Honestly, I didn’t notice.”

My heart sinks at the thought of that. That’s not good news for me, right? That must mean that she was too busy or focused onsomeone elseto notice how shitty he played. I hope that’s not the case – he’s the only reason we’re doing this.

“You played good tonight.”

I look at her through my eyebrows. “I know.”

She shoves my shoulder playfully, and I force the car to jerk with me. She holds herself steady on the dashboard. “Please don’t do that again,” she begs.

I agree. “Yeah, don’t put your hands on me then.”

She rubs my shoulder with two hands, so I start swerving the car. Her body moves with the car as she giggles. “Okay. Okay. I’m going to be sick.”

With the car on cruise control, Maddie is flipping through more songs, stopping at the ones she knows by heart. I can’t help but sneak glances at her while she throws her blonde hair around the car like she’s on a dance floor. She is so carefree and happy in this moment. I feel like her guard is down. This night has turned into one of my favorite nights.

By the time I park outside of my house, Madison is fast asleep on her throne. I glance over, not wanting to disturb her. She looks peaceful with relaxed features and soft breathing. I brush her hair out of her face and wonder what the fuck I’m going to do with her. The graze makes her stir. She turns her head in my direction, slowly opening her eyes. When she notices it’s me, she screams.

Chapter 15

I put a hand over my obnoxious mouth. He scared the fuck out of me. Like I said, I’m used to gray eyes, not these bright vivid blue eyes that are staring straight into my soul. I feel like I can seehissoul. And it’s scary!

Well, right now, they’re darkening. It must be from the pure shock from my loud scream. But why is he so close to me? I can feel the heat of his fingertips that just touched my hair. It tickled my forehead, and I thought it was a spider crawling on my face. But nope, it’s just Greyson making a sweet gesture. I would have never thought he’d ever do a sweet gesture for a thousand lifetimes. I take a deep breath. My nerves are crawling around my entire body right now under his gaze. His sharp blueish gaze. Sure, I like this Greyson, but I’ve been flirting with him nonstop this entire drive and that’s probably not okay – given the way he’s looking at me right now. He’s searching my face, and I’m pretty sure he would kiss me if I wasn’t some fake girlfriend that he had to deal with. He licks his lips, and his eyes soften.Oh, yeah. The player in him would definitely kiss me right now.
