“Oh,” she swirling around her cup of ice water. “You have our whole future planned, do you?”

I nod.

“And what is this plan exactly?” she asks.

I lean forward, staring at her face. She’s just perfect with those light freckles on her nose. “The plan is that you’re going to follow me in the NHL. You’ll wear your cute jersey with my name on it, scream my name every time I make a goal, and hold up a cute handmade poster. I’ll buy you a big house, I’ll ask you to marry me, we’ll have kids, and we’ll grow old together.”

She’s smiling ear to ear. “And what makes you think about all of that? We’ve only been officially together for a day.”

I smile and shrug. “When you know, you know. Now eat your damn pancakes so I can take you home.”

She takes a bite of her food.

“Maddie,” I murmur as she looks up. “Like a puck to the net, you’ll always be my end goal.”

She holds in her flattered smile. “Wow, Grey. You are…”

I nod. “I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.”

Grey: I need to talk to you

Matt: About what

Grey: In person

Matt: Nah

I knock on Matt’s door an hour later. He has roommates, so I welcomed myself in here just like he did at my house. And now I’m knocking on his bedroom door with no fucking patience.

“Get the fuck,” Matt scowls on the other side of the door.

I open it, letting the door fall open. Kara, who is in Maddie’s group of friends, is frantically putting her jeans on.

Matt yells at me. “What the fuck, man!”

“What?” I stare at Kara who is turning beet red. And I can’t help but laugh.

“Why the fuck are you laughing?” Matt snaps, throwing on a shirt.

Kara runs out of the room without a word while I stare at the perfect Matthew Pearson.

“That,” I point at Kara. “Is not going to help you win back Maddie.”

“Shut the fuck up,” Matt says. “You’re not here to help me get Maddie back.”

I laugh again. “Nope. I’m here to tell you that you’re fucking done chasing Maddie. But it seems like I don’t need to tell you because well, now, you’re fucking Kara.”

“That bitch is just keeping the spot warm.”

I step closer to Matt. “I’m fucking serious. You’re done obsessing over Maddie. You and her are done. It’s over. She’s with me now.”

Matt sits on his bed with a laugh.

“Do you fucking understand?”

Matt has that forced smile on his face. He looks pained. His cheeks start to shake, and I hope he’s not about to cry. “She fucked you?” His face drops as he stands. He walks over to me and asks again. “Maddie fucked you?”

“Yeah,” I say, waiting for the jawline punch.
