The beta had been silent since they left the centre. Xaine opened one eye and glanced at him. He wondered how he felt since he spent all that time with him. Did Klane notice that he wasn’t all there?

Fuck, Xaine couldn’t believe he’d lost all that time.

“I’m not sure how I feel,” Xaine said honestly. “Did you notice that I was off?”

“No. You were more obsessive and snappier when things didn’t go your way, but you’ve always been that way, so…” Klane shrugged.

“And my heat was I…the same?” Xaine rubbed the back of his neck, feeling uncomfortable.

He didn’t remember having sex. Not that his sex life was anything to write home about, but not remembering who he was with, when and how... was terrible.

“You didn’t go into heat,” Klane said. “Or feel the need to…you know…have sex.”

What the fuck?

“I’ve been on autopilot for…”

“Two months,” Klane offered.

“Two months? And you didn’t think to take me to the centre!” Klane laughed, much to Xaine’s displeasure. “I’m serious and you’re laughing.”

“You say that as if you would have let me,” Klane mumbled as he continued to laugh. “At first, I thought your heat was delayed because of the drugs, and as the second month came around, and you still didn’t say anything, I got worried. I tried to talk to you about slowing down before you passed out, don’t you remember?”

“I don’t remember anything,” Xaine buried his face in his hands and loudly groaned. “Fuck…fuck…what did that fucking drug do to me?”

He might not have had the most satisfying sex life but taking his sex drive away completely…kill him now. He had no physical contact outside of sex. T

he service omegas he’d been with might not have been affectionate and didn’t touch him, but Xaine could feel them – feel their heat, their soft skin and weight. Without his sex drive, Xaine wouldn’t be intimate with anyone, the closeness that sex offered would be gone. No one wanted to touch him. “Turn this pod around. I need to talk to Dr Micha.”

“I’m sure it will come back once the drug is out of your system,” Klane said.

“I need to be sure. Turn the pod around,” he said, ready to snap. It took Dr Micha running test on him for Xaine to believe that his heat would come back. He returned home feeling slightly good even though things were not going his way. He felt even better when Klane showed him what he’d been up to for the past two months. “I guess I’m brilliant even when I’m out of my mind.”

“You sound very humble right about now,” Klane said. “But I have to agree. The logistics plans you sent to the council of alphas are brilliant. They implemented them as soon as you submitted the documents. We’ve successfully transported a thousand omegas from their homes to commune houses across the planet.”

Xaine nodded. His mind already whirling, coming up with other solutions they could implement to make the lives of omegas easier. The more he thought about it, the more excited Xaine became. And he felt calmer as his mind focused on a goal.

Maybe that’s what he needed; work. Nothing more. Xaine threw himself into work, fought his urges and avoided all his triggers. It felt good to watch all his projects grow and become a reality.

But one thing was missing – sex. Xaine longed for it. It might have been the most unsatisfying activity in his life, but he longed for that feeling.

The burn of heat down his spine. The warmth of an omega as he buried his cock inside him. Xaine never thought he would miss it this much. As days went by, and his heat didn’t come, Xaine grew frustrated and antsy.

Chapter 8

Six months later

Xaine

Xaine was going fucking crazy.

“Are you sure it’s your heat?” Klane asked calmly. The beta’s voice rubbed him the wrong way. Xaine growled, scratching his arms. Granted, he wasn’t showing the normal signs of his heat, but he felt…weird inside. The urge to fuck wasn’t there.

His cock was limp as a noodle, but he felt like he needed something.

“Maybe you’re anxious. We’re finally ready to open the first house to the public. There are going to be a lot of people there, the media, the council of alphas and Maxus. I know you’ve been avoiding your triggers, but there’s no way you can do that there. And we can’t make everyone wear scent blockers. Or could we?” Klane asked, looking thoughtful.

“No. I need to fuck,” Xaine said, pacing the length of his office. “Find me an omega in heat. Maybe his scent will trigger me.”
