With every moment, I fidgeted more. I crossed and uncrossed my legs. And worse, Ron noticed, more than once.

He didn’t say anything, but his questioning glance was enough. Several times his gaze shifted to over my shoulder. With a slight twitch of his eyes, it was clear exactly who he was looking at.

I grew incensed, mixed with embarrassment, topped with a ball of crazy need, and none of it helped me focus.

In front of me, Ron started sliding the large stack of paperwork I’d brought back into the folder.

“Does he even have a case?” I asked, twisting my fingers in my lap.

“I suppose it’s more important to say that his lawyer believes he has a case.”

I frowned. “That doesn’t sound good.”

“Rest assured,” Ron said, tapping the thick file on the desk before looking at me. His smile was genuine, a bit soft and a lot kind, but as his gaze flickered over my shoulder again, also walked the edge of condescending. “We’ll take care of this. I have no doubt that I’ll be able to get them to drop this ridiculous settlement. You’ve already proven you gave him more than required when you left, and since you legally filed to separate before you bought the property, I’m fully confident you will not end up owing your ex-husband another dime. Many married couples separate legally without ever divorcing, but the effects of that separation are essentially the same.”

I closed my eyes and exhaled. I had hoped for this response.

“How much trouble has Timothy given you since the divorce?” Ron asked, his tone deepening to one my father used to use on me, one full of concern and guidance.

“None, really.” I shrugged. “Before I moved back home he tried to convince me for another chance, but since I’ve returned to Denton, he’s only called a handful of times. He came into town once to see some old high school friends of ours and stopped by my place to talk, but we only spoke for a few minutes. Honestly, I thought that was the last time I would see him, so it was all that more surprising when this suit was delivered.”

“I will urge you to be careful. If he was silent for months, and based on the history you’ve shown of him not being able to hold down a job, this behavior concerns me.”

“What are you saying?”

“That sometimes, men who become desperate also become stupid. Be careful and aware, I wouldn’t be surprised if he contacts you.”

Heat hit my whole body, like I’d stepped right up to a raging bonfire. “She’ll be safe, I assure you,” Jensen said, his voice cold as steel.

Ron’s eyes crinkled at the edges. My spine stiffened, at Jensen’s presence and hearing the possessive tone in his voice. Ron shook his head, amusement making those eyes crinkle even deeper.

“I think that’s it for today,” he said, looking back at me. “I’ll be in touch as soon as I know more and can look into this further.”

Jensen’s hand brushed against my shoulder before settling on the back of my chair.

“If you’re done with her, then,” Jensen said.

“By all means.” Ron nodded and waved his hand out. “She’s all yours.”

A heavy lump settled in my stomach. Before I could correct him, Jensen answered. “Yes. She is.”

Jensen

Haley’s anger and embarrassment rolled off her in undulating waves as I guided her toward the conference room. I had pushed her further than maybe I should have, yet I needed to test her, too. I needed to know her limits.

As the door to the conference room clicked shut behind us and she spun around, trying to stab me to death with the daggers she was shooting from her narrowed, fiery green eyes, I figured I’d reached them.

She crossed her arms over her chest. “I told you no public humiliation.”

Her chest heaved and dipped and her cheeks flushed. Yeah, she was angry. She was also really turned on.

I took a step toward her. “Ron’s office isn’t public. My office isn’t public. Public would have been me making you wear a remote-controlled vibrator and bringing you to orgasm in a restaurant while the waiter stood at our table.” Crimson stained her cheeks. I pushed forward, moving closer to her. “Public would be taking you back to the club and strapping you to the St. Andrew’s cross, whipping you while dozens of people got off on watching you.”

Her throat dipped as she swallowed.

I grinned, taking the final step to her until the tips of my shoes were at the tips of hers. “Are you ready for relief?”

Her lips parted on a quick intake of breath. “Here?”
