Other than keep Addi safe, which, admittedly, was pretty damn easy since we were so secluded up there.

“Thanks. I’m sure she’ll appreciate it.”

As for me, there had to be something I could do for her to wash away the absolute horror she’d woken too.

An idea sprang to mind. There’d been one day since all of this began when Addi felt powerful and strong, capable of protecting herself and, if necessary, keeping me safe as well. Not that she had to worry about me, but it’d make her feel better.

I grabbed my phone from the pocket of the sweats I’d thrown on earlier and dialed Jaxon’s number.

“’Lo?” he answered on the second ring.Shit.I hadn’t considered Jaxon wasn’t immortal and might actually need sleep.

“Shit. Sorry Jax—didn’t mean to wake you.”

“Was getting up anyway, no worries. Everything okay?”

“Addi had another nightmare last night. A bad one.”

He yawned loud, like a bear. “Makes sense. New place, stress…”

“Yeah, I know, but I need something to take her mind off it. Do you know of a gun range or gym I could take her to? Teach her some self-defense or something.”

I could have googled it, but Jaxon would already know the best places.

He made a throaty sound that sounded like a chuckle. “Yeah, about a mile and a half southeast of the house.”

“You have a gym in the mountains?”

“No, asshole. A gun range. Take the Jeep in the garage. You’ll need it for the dirt trails.”

Damn. I must have only been half awake still because I was having a hard time processing what he said. “There’s a gun range out there?”

“Yeah. Set it up myself. Have at it.”

Of coursehe had his own private gun range.

“House is on fifty acres of protected land, and it’s nowhere near hiking trails or hunting land. Enjoy.”

Damn. That sounded perfect. “Thanks, Jaxon.”

“No problem. I’ll let you know if I hear anything else today, but we started tracing that little Bancroft shit last night. Bull hasn’t called in yet, but Charlie has hacked his cell phone records and we know he’s been in touch with Daniel. Hopefully this asshole leads us to the asshole we really want.”

Fuck, that was good news. A bit of the pressure in my chest eased. If he could lead us to Daniel, we could end this. “Good. Thanks.”

“Take care of her.”

He ended the call, and Cort stopped what he was doing, which was measuring flour. Pancakes from scratch? Sign me up. “What’d he say?”

I grinned, possibly my first true one in days—maybe weeks. “He has an outdoor gun range on the land.”

Cort barked out a laugh. “Of course that crazy fucker does.”

Crazy fucker was right, but right then, I was damn glad for it. Four-wheeling and shooting guns? I was all about it.

Teaching Addi how to handle more guns and become more comfortable with the twenty-two I’d packed for her would at least give her a sense of being able to handle whatever would come her way.

I was sure of it.
