The click of his door closing after she left brought with it a heavy silence.
We spoke at the same time.
“I’m keeping it.”
“Are you sure it’s mine?”
And then again.
“Okay.”
“Yes.”
A nervous laugh fell from both of us, and Davis swiped his hand over his mouth before that glazed look in his eyes returned. “I’m not sure what we even need to talk about, to be honest. Do you need anything? Something to eat? Drink?”
“I’m good.”
“Should we sit?”
I moved toward the couch with trepidation. I’d been spread out all over that thing, thigh draped over the back while his fingers drove me wild. While he teased my nipples and had me crying out his name, and even though I hadn’t forgotten a single moment of that night, being there, seeing that couch brought it all back in vivid detail.
“Show me how you like it.”
A shiver rolled through me before I could fight it back, and I took a seat on the chair, the only visible piece of furniture we hadn’t defiled.
Davis went to the fridge and grabbed his own water before turning. If I wasn’t mistaken, he stared at the couch a beat longer than normal too, before he took a seat farthest from me.
“I have questions, and I’m not sure where to start, but you’re one hundred percent sure you’re pregnant, and it’s mine?”
I’d repeat it as many times as he needed me to. His shock was probably the same, or worse, than mine had been.
“Yes. I have blood test results and printouts of the first scan I had if you need to see.” I reached for my purse, but he shook his head.
“Not right now. And the other?”
“The last guy I was with was months before you. Tim and I dated for a few months, and it ended in the spring. I haven’t been with anyone since. Well… until you.”
His jaw jutted out, and he was again shaking his head. “I don’t really want to hear specifics about who else you slept with as long as you’re sure.”
I held my hands in my lap like I was getting reprimanded by my prep-school Sunday teacher. “We can do DNA testing if you need the proof, and I’m really sorry to drop in here, tonight of all nights, but I wanted you to know.”
He nodded at the DNA testing, lifted his head, and stared out to his patio, the night sky of Nashville black, before turning that gaze back to me.
“I was pissed you left after that night.”
Not at all what I was expecting him to say, and surprise chilled my body before quickly heating it, probably why I opened my mouth and nothing but “Ohhhh….” fell out.
Chapter 7
Davis
Goddamn.
First, fuck Tim.
Second… pregnant? Probably should have been first, but seriously, fuck that guy who got to have her and enjoy her before me.
My head was a goddamn mess, which was probably why I went back to that night, but it was the one consistent thought racing through my mind since Roger told me she was downstairs.
