“Where’s my wife, Lorcan?”
He started to follow.
“In Jersey City,” he said. “She let Liam unblock me.”
I chuckled, even though I was simmering inside, and slid into the back seat.
“Take me to her.”
Halfway there my phone vibrated with a call from my ma.
“You good, ma?”
But it wasn’t her voice on the other line.
“It’s me Brynn,” she whispered. “Mrs. Caroline said I could call you.”
Her worried voice brought a smile to my face.
“Your sister and I will be home before you wake up,” I told her, hoping it’d give her peace of mine.
She sighed.
“Promise?”
I thought about how I wanted to respond; if I promised and one of us didn’t come home, it’d make me a liar. But I didn’t want to scare her either.
“Sometimes,” I started, deciding to choose honesty. “There are promises we won’t be able to make, but what Icanpromise is to try my very best to do exactly what I said, does that work for you?”
She was silent for a second, but the response, when it came made me proud.
“Okay. That works for me. I believe you.”
My ma’s voice spilled through the phone next.
“You’ll make a great father someday,” she said, reminding me of the baby fever I was trying to combat until this was over. “I’m proud of you. Now do your very best.”
She hung up and I turned my phone off; if they needed me my ma knew how to securely get in touch.
Lorcan rolled to a stop outside a warehouse and Blair was standing there, waiting.
Mmm.
“Greeting me at the curb? You spoil me.”
She rolled her eyes but I saw the little twitch in her lips she tried to hide.
“Where were you?”
I smiled and stopped in front of her.
“You so fucking pretty, Amoy.”
Every time I looked at her, something else became my favorite; today it was her ears. She’d always hated them, calling them too big when they fit her perfectly. I enjoyed when she rocked her hair in a bun and showed them off.
Unimpressed, she smacked her lips.
“Answer my question.”
