Page 100 of Unexpectedly In Love

“I didn’t think you could still have sex that old.” Sage pours a glass of wine and gulps it down.

“I um, I think we should leave,” I mutter, trying to forget how my mom looks while she is doing the—“I think I wanna puke.”

“Hold that shit in, Ani.” Rosemary opens the kitchen tap and washes her face off.

“What the hell are you doing Rosie?” Sage asks as she pours another glass of wine.

“Washing my eyes out. I think we should leave.” Rosie grabs a paper towel and dries her face.”

“You guys are being ridiculous. I’m proud of my 62-year-old mom, and to know that her coochie is still popping, it gives me hope.” Cassia stretches on a cream sofa, throwing her blanket over her legs.

We all stop as a dark-skinned short gentleman enters the living room, and we all just stare at him.

“Good day,” he mutters as he is gripping his old baseball cap with his life.

We don’t say anything; each of us just continues to watch him. Sage added her stink eye and Roise gave him her classic side eye.

Mom comes out in a satin robe and tightens. She taps his shoulder and kindly escorts him to the door.

The poor man appears somewhat apprehensive like we caught them doing something wrong. “I will call you later. Jackson.”

She closes her door and turns to us. “Why are you all in my house?”

“Because you haven’t seen us in a month, Ma. I had a kid and you are here,” Sage mutters.

“Living my best life,” my mom replies.

Myrtle Loveridge stands with an air of elegance around her. I think that’s where Sage gets it from. Her stunning silver-grey hair and her high cheekbone are the perfect combination for her natural beauty. My mom is the epitome of grace.

“I’m sixty-five not dead. How do you think you all came here? The stork?”

I grimace at thought as she walks to Cassia.

She reaches down to kiss Cassia, and Cassia instantly pulls away. “I don’t know where your mouth has been mama. Go change. We will wait.”

It doesn’t take long for my mom to change and for us to sit and have brunch.

“Where are my babies?” my mom asks while passing the potato salad to Rosemary.

“I got a nanny. They are all with her. Zac is home too,” Sage replies.

“I was coming to see you all this evening. Sit up straight, Cassia.” She gently passes her hand over Cassia’s back.

“Now tell me about Eryx. Rosemary tells me he fixed one of our home videos. He sounds like a catch,” my mom pokes me to the side with her elbows.

“He was but it’s over now we got a divorce,” saying the words out loud hurts some more.

“Oh no, my baby. Tell me everything.” My mom pulls me into her chest. I don’t care what age you are, when your mom pulls you in for a hug you will melt.

With the help of my sister, we all relay the events that she missed.

“Men are stupid, they make mistakes. But we never accept their disrespect because of their stupidity.”

“Amen,” Rosemary shouts.

“I would say that he loves you, but he needs to respect you too. Those two must go hand in hand.” My mother’s cheek reddens as she touches my face.

“Ani, I love you so much. You are an amazing person. He will be a fool not to fight for you.”
