“I already signed both documents. You can stay here as long as you like, but as forementioned, you can use the house that was promised.”
I shake my head. “I love you. I love everything about you. We are happy. You love me too.”
My voice trembles with hints of desperation. He looks at me, his eyes are calm and detached.
“I never said that” he replies so gently. It’s worse than a shout. His words felt like a blow to my heart. It slices through my very marrow. He was right, he never said that he loved me.
My mouth falls open in disbelief. “Are you saying that you don’t love me, Eryx?”
He inhales deeply, stands and says, “I’m saying our time has come to an end and our contract has been fulfilled.”
The back of my eyes feels hot, tears threaten to slip over. I blink rapidly as I try to prevent them from falling. I would rather drag my ass on hot coals before I cry in front of this man.
“You’re right, you never did say you loved me. Please pass me a pen,” I needed to get out of here before I breakdown. My legs tremble under the table. This was just too much for me.
He picks up his gold pen and passes it to me. “It doesn’t have to be done now. You can carry it to your lawyer.”
“Yes, it does,” I begin to sign near all the little tabs pointing to the signature line.
As the pen makes a final stroke, my mind is screaming for me to get out of here.
I pull the rings off my finger and gently I rest them on his desk. The small clink of the rings sounds so loud in this silent room.
“Okay.” I stand dusting the invisible lint off of my pants.
“Anise, I—” He stretches his hand out to me.
“Honestly, I’m relieved we are through. Now I can find a real man to show my son what courage and true power look like unlike his father.” I don’t even bother to wait for his response.
I get up and calmly walk to the door. “Have a great life, Eryx.”
Opening the door, I throw my shoulders back and walk out of the office. The dogs come to my feet. I scratch their ears and head outside. As Cid parks the car at the bottom of the outdoor stairs, Kyros comes down behind me.
“Let me,” he says.
“How are you doing, Kyros?” I pull him in for a tight hug. “I didn’t get to tell you thanks for saving Kai and me.”
He flaps my words away. “It’s okay. Plus, I have been gathering more ladies with this sling.”
Kyros opens the door and lets me sit in the car. “Give him time he will get it right.”
“For another girl. I have to go, Kyros.” I don’t stop for him to add more to this discussion. I pull the door in.
“Where are we going?” Cid asks, his eyes are stuck on me in the rearview mirror.
“Sage’s home…I think.”
Taking my phone out of my pocket I text my sisters.
Me: Emergency meeting.
Cassia: I’m dropping some stuff at Sage house.
Sage: You guys can come here.
Rosie: I just left work and Marcus has the kids.
Me: Fab, see you all soon.
