“The leader’s brother, I know,” I finished his sentence for him.
“Your father heard too?” he asked and I nodded.
He shook his head.
“They now know that you’re not dead, and they’re going to try and change that,” he continued as he kept packing.
“So?” I scoffed, “We’ll be ready for them. Once again their mouths have got them in trouble.”
Antoni shook his head, “come with me,” he grabbed me by the arm and dragged me back upstairs and out to the front of the house.
He unlocked his car, “get in,” he ordered.
I did what I was told and hopped into the passenger side.
“Where are we going?”
“I’m taking you to the safe house,” he said, pulling out of the driveway.
I chuckled, “you’ve lost your fucking mind if you think I’m not going to be there with you guys.”
He shook his head, “you’re in no state to help anyway. And as much as youfucking annoy me, I don’t actually want you dead.”
“Toni, no,” I scoffed again.
“No, Ren. I can’t afford to have you there. You’re the one they want, and you’re in no state to fight back.”
There were a few beats of silence as my mind raced.
They were coming for me.
Coming to finish the job, and I knew that they wouldn’t stop until I was dead. There was only one person I could think of, one person that I wanted to see before I died.
But she was long gone.
“What if I leave town?” I asked, once we were out of the city.
Antoni scoffed and shook his head, “you’re not going to see Valerie.”
I frowned, “how do you know that’s what I even meant?”
“Because I have more than two brain cells to rub together.”
“What if they go after her, Toni? They know that she also killed one of their men.”
The thought made me sick to my stomach.
I crossed my arms and sat back in the chair.
“You’d think that leaving the state would be much safer than the safe house.”
“It’s too risky, I’ll talk to my contacts over in Perth and get someone to keep an eye on Val, okay? No one will hurt her. She’s done well to lay low over there, no one knows who she is.”
I doubted that completely.
“I’ll have the boys do some shifts babysitting your trouble-making ass, and we’ll come get you once this is dealt with.”
I shook my head again.
