She was once my best friend, but I had to remind myself that she wasn’t that girl any more. Something about her had changed, or maybe she was this way all along but none of us saw it.

Either way, the Sierra that I loved like a sister was gone.

We both paused as Rome reached the top of the stairs, and cocked her head to the side as she noticed Sierra. Her eyes flickered to me for a split second, and back to Sierra.

Rome pursed her lips and shook her head.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”

“Hi, Rome,” Sierra said, straightening her posture, but the quiver in her voice gave away her nerves.

“What are you doing here, Sierra?”

“I-I just came to see Liv,” Sierra looked at me for a moment over her shoulder.

“Okay, well you’ve seen her now.”

Sierra nodded, not moving.

“Bye,” Rome snapped, moving out of the way of the stairs leading out of the club.

Sierra looked to her feet and quickly shuffled towards the door, giving Rome a wide perimeter of space as she passed her.

Rome watched her carefully as she headed down the stairs, not taking her eyes off her until she was gone. She then locked the door behind her and headed towards me, holding me by the shoulders and ducking to look at me in the eyes.

“Are you okay, Livie?” she asked, her voice softer than before.

I nodded, clutching at the collar of my shirt.

“Come on,” she sighed, guiding me towards a couch to sit down.

I told Rome everything.

Everything that Sierra had done.

Larissa returned with coffee in hand, holding one out for me as I sat up in bed.

“You should be lying down,” she frowned.

I chuckled, “I’m fine, Riss.”

She pursed her lips but didn’t argue.

“I’m so glad you’re okay, I was worried sick,” she leaned forward taking my hand in hers.

I smiled, nodding slowly.

“Once you’re feeling better I’m taking you out,” she perked up. “We can go to Lorboo, it’s this new restaurant on Collins Street. Marie said that they had the best entrées, and this thing called a trolley of cheeses, all organic and-”

“Yeah, maybe,” I sighed, cutting her off.

Organic cheese and entrées were the last thing on my mind. I couldn’t even bring myself to pretend to care. Larissa’s expression changed and I knew that I had pissed her off.
