“I need help,” he said quietly, his eyebrows drawn together again.

“One week,” I held up a finger.

“Three.”

“One,” I crossed my arms.

“Two.”

I narrowed my eyes and sighed again, holding out my hand.

He smiled as he shook it to confirm our agreement. He hopped out of the car and then stuck his head back inside.

“I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow morning.”

I rolled my eyes but nodded.

What the fuck had I gotten myself into?

Livie kept her promise.

She did indeed arrive early the next morning, with an iced coffee in hand, her purple hair pulled into a messy low bun, and dark circles under her eyes.

“Good morning sunshine,” I said, as she looked around the workshop.

“Ugh,” she scoffed, “a morning person. Great.”

I chuckled, my hand inside the rear wheel bay of last night’s acquisition - brand new Mercedes Benz. She slipped off her sunglasses and leaned on the side of the car, peering inside.

“What’s wrong with it?” she yawned, grabbing the flash light and shining it towards my hand.

“Nothing.”

“So what are you doing?”

I grunted, feeling around for the bumps that I knew had to be there somewhere.

“Looking for the hidden VIN.”

There was always a Vehicle Identification Number plate hidden somewhere on these cars, which the amateurs often forgot about - this is what got them caught. My fingers felt around until I felt the raised etchings and I smirked.

I grabbed Livie’s hand and directed the flash light to the plate.

She dropped down further and looked under the wheel bay, squinting towards the light.

“See?” I asked, running my fingers along the digits.

She nodded, “isn’t the VIN usually in the engine bay?”

“There’s generally a few locations. Lately the manufacturers have been putting a sneaky one in, hoping that thieves wouldn’t know about it.”

“Very clever,” she smiled, handing the flash light back to me, “so what do you do with it now?”
