“Where the fuck is he?”

Livie leaned forward, turning down the music.

“It’s okay, Sam. We’ll find him.”

“We need to get this done.”

“I know,” she snapped. “Lets go back to the main house and wait.”

I shook my head, “no. I’m taking you home.”

She frowned, “what? Why?”

“I’ll do it alone,” I said, putting my arm across the back of her seat and twisting to look behind me as I reversed.

She scoffed, “you can’t do it alone.”

“It’s too dangerous,” I shook my head.

She scoffed again, rolling her eyes, “that’s bullshit and you know it.”

“You’ve done enough, alright? I’m taking you home.”

“No, we’re finishing what we started. You can’t do it without me.”

I sighed, because she was right.

We needed two people to operate the relay boxes as quickly as possible, but I couldn’t help the guilt that was taking over my brain. It was one thing to do a drive by, and plant the dongles quickly. But a whole other thing to wait, to stakeout and watch the building and wait for him to show up.

It was different when we were sure that they were inside, but this was just getting more and more dangerous.

“Fine,” I said, pulling into the service station.

She frowned as I got out of the car.

I stormed into the little shop, and piled my arms up with supplies. I paid for them quickly and threw them onto her lap as I got back into the car.

“What the hell is all this?” she asked, digging through the pile of junk food.

“Stakeout food,” I said, reversing out of the parking space.

“You forgot the donuts,” she mumbled.

I groaned, shifting the car into drive and pulling back into the park.

I opened the door and stepped out.

“Where are you going now?” Livie yelled as I shut the door.

I didn’t answer, and headed back into the shop.

When I stepped back into the cool air, I looked at her sitting in the passenger seat, already elbow deep into a packet of chips. I got back into my seat, and placed the box of donuts on the dashboard.

“I was only kidding!” She laughed, snatching the box and opening it up, pursing her lips as she considered the different flavours.

I reversed again, back out onto the road.

“Oh you got the pink ones,” she sighed, gripping one in her fingers and shoving it into her mouth with a satisfied groan.
