But my concerns were answered as soon as we stepped through the doors.
Rome walked inside and dropped her bag at her feet, and looked around the crowded rooms to either side of us. Antoni heard the door slam shut and looked up from the table, his eyes landing on Rome.
The crease of concentration and worry between his eyebrows disappeared.
“Out,” he said plainly to the men surrounding the table, and they bowed their heads once and obeyed, filing out of the room and busying themselves in the lounge room across the hall.
Rome smirked at him, but neither of them moved.
He raised a hand, motioning for her to go to him with two fingers.
I could feel my own cheeks turning red from witnessing them as Rome slowly made her way to her husband.
He wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her tightly against his chest.
“You brought home a stray,” he said quietly, his eyes meeting mine for only a second.
“Just for the night,” she smiled up at him.
“Understandable,” Toni nodded, “after what happened today.”
“The fire?” Rome frowned up at him.
“Yeah, plus the-”
I shook my head furiously at him, trying to get him to read my mind and not tell Rome about Evan, but it was too late.
“Plus what, Liv?” she turned around to look at me.
I shook my head again, trying to look casual and flippant.
It didn’t work.
Antoni cleared his throat and rolled backwards and forwards on his feet, “anyway,” he stretched, “I should get back to it.”
I shook my head and narrowed my eyes at him as he kissed Rome on the top of the head and made his way to where his men were gathering.
“I’m sorry,” he mouthed as he walked past me and I rolled my eyes.
Rome leaned against the dining table, looking straight at me.
“So?” she asked.
I sighed and looked to my shoes, which were still a little damp.
“Come on,” I said, gesturing upstairs towards the office.
I followed her up the grand staircase and down the hall towards Antoni’s office, which was empty. We sat together on the leather couch, my damp clothes sticking uncomfortably to it as I told Rome all about Evan and Sierra’s friendship and what he had done, and what Sam had done.
“Well I’m glad that Sam did show up,” she scoffed. “Though I’m a little disappointed that he left him alive.”
“I was standing right there, Rome. He’s already killed one guy in front of me, I don’t think he wanted to make it two.”
Rome rolled her eyes, “I don’t get why they think we can’t handle it.”
“Youcan handle it, Rome. Doesn’t mean everyone else can.”
“It’s not like you’ve never done it, though. They know we’ve been there, done that.”
