“Are you surprised? It’s Daisy we’re talking about.” I sort of hate that Kane is acting like he knows me still. Maybe I was on the roof to…bird watch.

My brother sighs, and suddenly, his voice is even closer.

I dart backward to hide.

“True. Alright, I’ll check up there.”

I step out from behind the corner to glance below the landing. Kane is standing there with his arms crossed over his sculpted chest with his eyebrow raised in my direction.

“You’re welcome,” he calls out, walking back toward the kitchen.

I hurry down the stairs, feeling more stupid than ever for staying in his bed last night. I make it all the way to his front door before his voice hits me from behind.

“What? No thank you?” he asks.

My hand freezes on the doorknob.

I glare over my shoulder at him. “For what? The orgasm or for making it seem like I’m a slutty puck bunny?”

Kane’s mouth twitches. “Did I strike a nerve?”

No.

The thought of you with puck bunnies did!

I spin toward him angrily.

An insult taunts me, threatening to slip out to hurt him so I can hide the jealousy I feel.

Kane leans his bare hip against the counter, showing off his tight abs and low-hanging sweats. He’s dangerously hot, but I refuse to be swept off my feet from the flirty look he’s giving me.

“I should’ve known you’d never change,” I grumble.

Kane places his mug down and eyes me closely. “Meaning?”

I pause.

The text I accidentally saw lingers in the back of my head, and I want to bring it up in the worst way, just to heighten the tension, but…I can’t. I’m not even sure what it means, or who it’s from.

“Ah…” Kane’s lopsided grin makes me crazy. “I see. You’re jealous at the thought of me being with puck bunnies?”

Irritation pricks at my scalp.

I mean, he’s right, but there’s no way I’m telling him that.

“I couldn’t care less,” I snap. “And thanks for the orgasm.” I open the door. “It won’t happen again.”

“We’ll see,” he calls out, his voice carrying out into the hallway and all the way to my apartment where I’ll peacefully sip on my matcha latte…alone.

Thirty-Six

KANE

Keepingmy distance has been harder than I thought. Without there being a game for two days, I was counting on the fact that I wouldn’t run into Daisy in that revealing devil’s costume at the rink, but leave it to River to be fucking clueless and invite her to go out with us.

He rarely gets any time off, but whenever he does, he wants to go explore the city—something I’m fine being a wingman for.

Until he brings Daisy along for the ride.
