I stare at the side of her pink cheek and put my hand into my pocket. “Just wait until you bring some guy back to the apartment,” I warn. “I’ll end it before it even gets started, just like you did to me last night.”
Her sweet laugh slows my world for a second. “How will you know when I bring a guy back? Are you going to start stalking me?”
When. Not if.
I rarely feel jealous. There isn’t anyone I’ve had in my arms that I wouldn’t willingly give up a moment later.
But when it comes to Daisy…
The protectiveness I still have over her isn’t as fleeting as I’d like for it to be, even with our past.
“I’ll know,” I say with confidence.
Little does she know, I have access to the camera in the hallway.
The elevator door opens, and she walks out first, heading toward the front doors instead of the parking garage.
Daisy, who looks much livelier today than she did yesterday evening, sends me a breath-stealing smile over her shoulder. “Seems like you’ve forgotten that I know how to sneak a guy into my bed.”
I’m struck with silence from her bold statement.
And here I thought she’d never bring it up again after we had words the other day.
She turns and disappears into what looks like an Uber, leaving me to drive to the arena alone.
I’m competitive by nature, and if we’re keeping count, that’s twice Daisy has won our little sparring battle in the last twenty-four hours, which is just fucking unacceptable.
Eleven
DAISY
I felt terrible yesterday,but today, I’m a brand-new person.
That’s the thing with having an autoimmune disease. Some days you are fine, and other days, you’re justnot.
I went to Dr. Gibson’s office yesterday for some routine bloodwork to make sure my Lupus is still at bay, and apparently, my body was not a fan of that. Nausea got the best of me, and then it was made three hundred times worse when the elevator door opened to reveal Kane mauling some girl’s neck.
Heat swept my lower belly, and nausea rolled through me.
That’s why I reacted the way I did.
With River at the hospital again, I ordered some necessities to get me through the night if the nausea continued, but instead of stepping onto the elevator to meet my delivery driver downstairs, I got a front-row seat to a porno.
Ugh.
He said my little stunt last night initiated war, but doesn’t he realize we’ve been in a constant war since the moment we met years ago?
Only now, we’re fighting to get away from one another instead of fighting to get closer.
“There she is!” I perk up at the sound of Cindy’s voice. She’s a friendly face compared to Kane’s and the grumpy Uber driver with the eyepatch.
“Hi.” I smile.
“You ready for this, Blue Devil?” Cindy pulls me over to the center of the visitor locker room floor, which is what we’re borrowing for the fitting since the team is on the ice for practice.
“As ready as ever,” I lie.
I glance at the huge Blue Devil head on the bench and cannot believe I’m about to be the team’s mascot. I still haven’t filled River in because he’ll find it hilarious, and I can’t deal with that right now.
