I couldn’t speak. I thought I’d gotten the tears under control, but I was barely hanging on now.

And I’d fucking slept with the man.

“He didn’t gather us,” Missy said, still trying to clean this up. “We were at the bunkhouse hanging out. There was no gathering, I swear. Adam’s making it sound way worse than it was. Plus I think he’d been drinking.”

“Missy, it’s fine,” I said, stretching. “I’m pretty beat, though. We’ll work again on this tomorrow, okay?”

“Shit. I shouldn’t have said anything. I’m so sorry. I started all of this.”

“No. You didn’t start anything. It’s fine.” I waved her off as I grabbed my jacket off the chair.

Missy was back to staring at Adam. “You asshole. Why are you making it sound so bad?”

“Hey, I’m not lying. He said everything I just repeated,” Adam said.

The guy was a troublemaker, but his words were ringing true.

The only good thing happening now was that Elijah had walked in. He could break up any fight that broke out between Missy and Adam. I had to get out of there.

I’d done some stupid things in my life, stuff that had kept me up nights, and yet nothing had made me feel as stupid as this. I’d danced with him at the wedding, laughed at his jokes. I’d probably looked like a lovestruck fool.

Chapter40

Kade

John’s number was flashing.

“It’s done. I’ve got someone lined up who’s going to come clean tonight. He was involved in the delivery end. Should clear her name. It’s going to cost you, but by tomorrow, I expect you’ll be hearing from her lawyer.”

“What about her stepfather?”

“I’ve got a pile of dirt on him. We could bury him in some hellhole of a prison for the rest of his life. What do you want me to do with his dirt?”

“Sit on it for now.” Prison might be too good for him. I was going to have to sit and think on this one.

“I got you.”

“There’s no links back to us?” If I did decide there was a better end to Edwin, I couldn’t have it coming back to me.

“You know me better than that.”

I spotted Missy heading toward the office, wringing her hands, her ponytail a mess.

“Gotta go.” I hung up.

“Kade? You got a minute?” she asked. Missy’s cheeks were flushed and she was breathing heavy.

“What’s wrong now?”

“I screwed up bad.”

“What did you do?” I waved her in and shut the door, having the feeling I wasn’t going to want any interruptions if I could help it.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to do it.” She bit her lip and then her nails while she paced across the room and then back.

“Just tell me what happened.”

By the time she finished, I wished I hadn’t heard. Adam was an asshole, but I couldn’t be mad at him. I’d been the one who’d said those things.
