I got into my car and headed down the driveway, Moose right behind me. I took a left while he took a right.
As I drove down the road, I got teary-eyed. I really, truly loved Nova and Maddox. And... well, I loved Moose as well.
It was all so crazy and so fast, but I couldn’t deny my feelings. I went and fell head first for that man and his kids.
I shook my head and reached for my coffee. “Focus, Lily. Hope Hearted then you can think about the impending doom of falling in love.”
Taking another sip of coffee, I turned into the driveway for Hope Hearted.
No impending doom. Everything will be fine. Shut your mouth and let it happen.
I looked up to see a female police officer waiting by her patrol car. Sighing, I got out of my car and prepared to deal with whatever shitstorm was brewing.
Walking over, I placed my hand out and smiled.
“Hi, I’m attorney Banks. Can I help you?”
The woman turned around and smiled back at me.
“Oh, hey! I’ve been waiting for you. I’m Officer Holland, new to the department and this is my first call.”
She nervously laughed as we headed toward the house.
“Hey, it’s better than dealing with Joey drunk at the bar who’s been crying about how his ex wife took his prize goat.”
“Oh god…”
I laughed as I opened the door, and we walked into the kitchen.
“Yeah, welcome to town! So what brings you to Hope Hearted today?”
“One of the women called me. There’s a young girl who’s been coming around and they wanted me to stop her.”
I shook my head. “I told them to let her be.”
Officer Holland shrugged. “It happens. They think she’s underage and their inner mama bears are coming out. Anyway, we had to have a talk about not cornering her and refusing to let her leave. ‘Cause that’s kidnapping.”
“I’m so sorry you have to deal with this first thing in the morning, Officer Holland.”
“You can just call me Daisy! And it’s really no big deal. I’m glad they called. Most of these women don’t trust the police, so if I can come out here and start creating a relationship with them, I call it a win.”
I smiled at the young officer. “Well, I’m glad we have you on our team.”
“Me too. I know where these women are coming from. Anyway, if you get any info on the new girl, please let me know. Unfortunately, if she is underage by law I have to step in.”
“Absolutely. I rushed over here, hoping I could reach her. I guess I’m too late though.”
The front door opened and Thor came walking through the kitchen, bags of groceries filling his arms. He placed them on the counter and turned to face us.
“Hey. I’m Thor.”
Daisy blushed as she stood up. “I-I’m Officer Holland.”
Thor smiled, and I swear Daisy’s whole body turned bright red.
“You ain’t causin’ trouble, are you?”
“Just here doing my job.”
