“Then it’s done. We don’t speak of King again.”

Relief floods my veins and I jerk my chin, silently communicating my appreciation to the man we all take our orders from. Then, I glance back at Shady.

“Bianca and Abigail are my cross, not yours. I appreciate you getting her out of my face and looking into things, but that ends here too.”

His brown eyes lock with mine and for a moment something flickers in them…something I can’t quite place. Then he tips his chin and closes his hand over the piece of paper with Bianca’s information, sliding it off the table and back inside his pocket.

I push in my chair and walk toward the door. Without another word or a glance in their direction, I exit the chapel. That’s when my eyes land on Birdie.

Peace.

Maybe it’s not so far out of reach.

Chapter Fourteen

Birdie

Oh boy,I think I did it again.

I lift my glass and take another sip of the vodka. Emmy couldn’t find any fruit punch or cranberry juice, so I’m drinking it straight. Maybe that’s why I so easily agreed to work for Holly.

Yes, you heard that correctly. As of thirty-six seconds ago, I’m the new secretary of H & M Recycling. I don’t even know what that entails, or what exactly it is they actually recycle, but it’s a job so there’s that and she agreed to pay me off the books—another win.

A lot can happen when these bikers do the church thing.

“Hey.”

At the sound of Ghost’s husky voice against my ear, I choke on the last sip of vodka. He gives my back a pat and squeezes the side of my hip.

“You okay? Get her some water,” he barks.

“Here ya go, babe,” Holly says, pushing a bottle of water into my hand. Ghost takes it and unscrews the cap for me before handing it back. I take a sip and set the bottle down on the bar.

“Thanks,” I murmur. “Wrong pipe.”

“The excitement got to you,” Holly says. If there weren’t a bar separating us, I’d kick her in the shin for opening her mouth. New friend slash boss or not.

“Excitement? What excitement?” Ghost questions. He doesn’t move from my side, instead he drapes an arm around my shoulders.

Well, this is a new development.

I turn my head so that I’m facing him and force a tight-lipped smile.

“A funny thing happened while you were off doing the church thing. I didn’t know how long you’d be so I put Emmy to work. You’re out of cranberry juice, in case you were wondering.”

“I wasn’t, but I’ll get you some,” he says.

Okay, so someone is going to have to explain this church thing to me because it’s like Ghost walked in one man and came out another. I mean there wasn’t time for him or I to say much to one another, so he wasn’t rude or anything but he’s awfully handsy and that’s new. Nice, but new.

“I’m waiting,” Ghost presses.

I worry my bottom lip between my teeth.

“For what?”

“For you to tell me what funny thing happened while I was at church.”

“Oh, right, um…me and Emmy weren’t just boozing it up, I was job hunting too. So when Holly came in and joined us, we were arguing about a job listing.”
