Page 58 of Chaos & Corruption

So Riggs drove me back to the apartment building. I had every intention of sleeping in my own bed that night, but as soon as I opened up the door, I saw Robinson and I knew I couldn’t stay there. I had too much hate toward both my roommates. I packed a bag and headed up to Mila and Victoria’s apartment. Thankfully, Mila didn’t slam the door in my face.

The next day, Coach Riley called me, ordering me to his office. One of two things was going to happen, either this whole thing with Webber overdosing would be swept under the rug in true Stonewall fashion, or I was going to be suspended for my involvement. I didn’t give Coach Riley a chance to decide my fate, though, and before he could get a word out, I told him I quit.

He tried to argue with me. Told me I was pissing away my career and that I should just take the suspension. If I did that, then I’d still have a shot at being drafted in the future. But the thought of being on the field with Webber, knowing all that I did, well, I knew there would be no way for me to do that.

I told him I’d think about it, but the decision was made.

I went back to the apartment building and this time I went straight to Mila’s. She gave me a spare key and we fell into a routine. Every day that week we went to our respective classes and then straight to the hospital. By Friday word has gotten out that Jennings was missing. Come to find out the reason everyone was looking for him is because Webber had woken up and told the cops he had got the drugs from him.

I didn’t know why Webber lied—my guess is to save Robinson’s ass. But what does that say about his involvement with Jennings? There was no way Webber found out that I had killed him and still he threw him under the bus. Something didn’t add up. I just didn’t give a fuck to find out what that something was.

“Alex!”

“I’m coming,” I call out, closing the door to the bedroom behind me. I hustle down the small hallway to find Mila halfway out the door, holding a cosmetic case.

“What’s that?”

“I figured I’d do her nails. If she wakes up and sees them the way they are, she’ll have a fit.”

I smile at her. It’s a nice gesture, but then again, Mila is full of them—something I’m starting to learn.

“I’m driving,” I say, stepping out of the apartment. I’m about to turn and lock the door when I spot Robinson and Webber by the stairs. Mila goes completely still beside me, and I don’t have to look at her to know her eyes are pinned to Webber’s. I don’t know when he got out of the hospital, but the guy like he belongs in the cast ofThe Walking Dead.

“Bro, you can’t avoid us forever,” Robinson says. “We just want to talk.”

Webber steps forward and Mila takes a step back.

“Mila—”

“Don’t you fucking say my name,” she snaps at him. He holds up his hands in mock surrender, his ashen cheeks hallowing out as he shakes his head.

“I’m not here to taunt you. The truth is I owe you an apology.”

Is he fucking kidding me? It’s a little too late for that.

“You can take your apology and shove it,” I growl, stepping around Mila. “What you did to her is inexcusable. How could you watch?”

He looks away and I swear to Christ there are tears in his eyes.

“I didn’t have a choice,” he rasps. “Jennings owned me. He knew my secret.”

I narrow my eyes.

“What secret? What the fuck are you talking about? Do you know what he did to Victoria? He almost fucking killed her.”

“I know, man, and I’m fucking sorry. I should’ve told you what he was going to do, but instead I took the fucking drugs because death is the only way out.”

“Alex, Jennings and Victoria had a class together,” Robinson interjects, forcing my gaze to cut to him. “She did a thesis paper on the chaos and corruption at Stonewall. She named the Scorpio Society in the fucking paper. Jennings heard and asked Webber to take her out. He said if he didn’t then he’d tell everyone the truth.”

“I’ll ask again, what fucking truth?”

My gaze slices back to Webber. He slowly lifts his head and meets my stare.

“I’m gay.”

I raise an eyebrow.

There’s no fucking way. I’ve seen him with girls. I’ve heard him having sex with them in the fucking apartment.
